How do the mining modes in df2014 work?
« on: January 12, 2015, 10:44:16 am »

I see options for designating all, automining ore/gems, etc. Can someone give me a rundown of what each of these does?

Automining makes dwarves try to mine the whole vein. It works wonders with ores, but not so much with gems, obviously.

EDIT: You can also designate ores and gems without designating ordinary rock, and then you can simply mark designations without actually mining them.

Is it working multi-zlevel or only one z-level?

Dwarven wine is a little bit like good chicken soup:  solid at room temperature.

Multi-level, as usual. If you move the cursor down to the lowest level, you can designate all revealed gems/ores on the map with a couple of keypresses.

I'm pretty sure they were asking if it'll autodesignate other Z-levels as they're discovered, in which case the answer is no (since you can't actually see higher tiles from lower ones or lower tiles from higher ones)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm a tardy checking out the new automining feature.  I'd love it to work on any type of stone, ore or gem.  Unfortunately, it looks like just higher value items are available to select.

I was unable to select chalk even though it's a flux stone, but I was able to select Kaolinite?!  Anyone savvy with this feature interested in putting up a wiki page?

Kaolinite is a layered stone.  I guess that's where I was confused.

Kaolinite is an "economic" stone.  That might have something to do with it.

Kaolinite is not a layer stone, it's found in large clusters, like Magnetite. That is why you can automine it. Large clusters, small clusters and veins are all valid automining targets.

That makes sense.  Thanks for the clarification.  Now all I need is a MUD plugin so that I can sell off this supercluster of Kaolinite. :)

Make it into porcelain statues or something, it actually has a very nice value modifier.

Kaolinite/Porcelain is my favorite way of producing early trade goods and nice furnishings.
