... it's called persistent social narrative, mostly. Your in group repeats the message until you automatically reject contrary narratives. There just happens to be a fairly sizable group that believes various alternate explanations.

Also it's not exactly collective. Common-ish for certain areas, enough so it's definitely easy to run into them, but most Americans would respond to "what was the civil war fought over" with "slavery".

She answers questions and speeches like the stereotypical politician, always saying what is "expected" of her.

I never get the notion that she is actually expressing an opinion.

She does to me. So does Trump, -the pc. Reminds me of the angry guy at the pup ranting politics. Bitching about foreigners stealing jobs & offering no real solutions. Unfortunately how politics tends to be. Expressing a more interesting opinion can be bad for your chances.

For starters she always seems to be very vague. It's always we must fight inequality! break down barriers! Move together and all those other nice catchphrases.

But I never really heard her actually explain HOW. What is she actually going to DO. She answers all questions with those nice sounding answers that don't actually say anything at all.

Really? Here's a page full of details on her various positions. Out of all the people running now, Hillary is the one I've most often seen break down her plans on camera.

Bernie's focus seems to be much more on the bigger issues than the details - there are multiple times I've seen him delay answering a policy related question to remind everyone that the 1% own too much wealth in this country. And Trump avoids details like the plague because apparently people interpret vagueness as honesty when it's coming from him.

That has been my impression too.  Bernie deflects half the questions to the (very real) economic issues in America, while Trump literally takes refuge in audacity.  They both know that people are dissatisfied, and offer outlandish solutions that'll never pass.

Trump has no consequences for failure, though.  He already won by becoming relevant again.  Anything else is just gravy.  He's not hurting his chances for reelection, because he has no political career to *risk*.  And that complete lack of consequence is interpreted as him being a progressive outsider, by at least one of my friends who wanted Sanders to win.  Any change at any cost.... absolute madness.
