Will (hypothetical) Missouri tech companies be able to skip it if they can claim it goes against their definition of marriage as an institution between one man and one woman?

How would anybody (aside from the crazies or some hyperconvulted made up reason) link the encryption stuff to that?

jokes

Seriously though I will make note of who votes in favor of that.
And vote against them, yes.  I may be pro-establishment, but this is just bad.

One person, one device*. This is a holy marriage whose sanctity is upheld via encryption and password protection. To be asked to break that - to allow someone else scandalous access to that godly bond - doesn't even bear thinking about.

*Or, well, one person and any number of devices. We practice polytech here.

Edit: If any of you guys are in North Carolina or California, please do us a favor and vote these people out of office.

Diane Feinstein is the most popular Republican today...

I really don't know why people like her.

She's a Democrat, not Republican.

I wonder when she is retiring though. I believe Barbara Boxer is retiring.

She's the most annoying Democrat, I think.

She's no true Scottsman, I'll tell you that much. But she's definitely not a Democrat in the sense that Bernie is a democrat.

I remember someone being a bit of a loose cannon during the early 2000's, maybe very late 1990's. I think that was Feinstein, or maybe it was someone else, don't remember, but I do know that it was a California politician that I voted for.

Also, @wolfhunter's edit: I could if she has a Democratic challenger. Not sure if I want to let a Republican in for California senate.

Edit: Feinstein isn't up for re-election this year, but Barbara Boxer is, she's retiring.

Honestly, I've become so absolutely jaded regarding encryption laws that I say just let the bill pass. Let the world reap what it sows; let it deal with the consequence of a leaked government backdoor of all encryption.

Seriously, if you want to make the government understand how technology works, best way is to show them what happens when their shitty ideas meet reality.

Even then, they'd probably still be confused, especially the older members.

Meh, it's about the same reasoning as voting Trump out of spite. Watching the world burn actually isn't as fun as certain jokers might make it out to be, unless you're a particularly violent breed of psychopath.

Anyway, good news for cybercriminals, who lose nothing (they already have access to reliable strong encryption, and the technical know-how to use it even when user-friendliness goes away), and potentially gain the ultimate skeleton key if things go wrong. Bad news for everybody else.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Fair enough, though I'd still argue that all Trump would accomplish is a lot of yelling and a lot of not getting anything done for 4 years.

That'd be the best case scenario, the worst case scenarios are what scare people.

He very well could end up not getting anything accomplished, but that won't stop him from being a diplomatic wrecking ball.

I must be one of these so called cyber criminals then... I already have GPG encryption enabled on my phone for sending and receiving emails. I could pretty painlessly rebuild my phone kernel to support encrypted filesystems off the bat, and things of this nature.

What's feinstien gonna do when she hits a 6 year old smartphone with encryption up the wazoo? complain about free software and people that know how to use it?

Woman is an idiot. I dont know why people listen to her, and doubly dont know why they keep voting for her. This is NOT the first time she has gone whole hog against encryption.

I mean seriously, if your phone is supported by cyanogenmod, you can build your own custom rom in about an hour. You can turn on all kinds of shit in the kernel, including the encrypted EXT4 driver.  You can change the mountpoint for /sdcard and /data so that /sdcard points to a disk image sitting on an encrypted host filesystem, and have all the fun of FAT and all the security of the host. (data is physically written encoded.)

Once all set up, it would feel like any other android based phone, but would make law enforcement shit blood.  All free software.

Really, I could configure the network stack to route everything through TOR if i wanted as well.

The genie is out of the bottle. Been out of the bottle for years. She's an idiot.
