We can all but hope that the US population pulls a Frenchy on him. (Remember what the French voters did to le Pen not too long ago?)

only Rand Paul was evenly remotely "moderate", and mostly in the sense of not wanting the government to meddle in morality.
Paul's not even remotely against the government meddling in morality, Rol, he just doesn't want the federal government to be doing it. Bit of a difference, heh. Pretty much totally okay with the states going as backassward as they please, from what I've noticed.

Insofar as moderates go... there were a couple that were about as close as republican candidates get. Pretty sure they've all dropped out, already. Also I've already forgotten who they are, as has the rest of the country.

Meh I was just going to post a warning in the EU thread for folks to calm down on the yes! no! debate, but Toady locked it before I could. I'll open a new EU thread tomorrow for people who actually read it for it's news value.

Rand Paul is a libertarian-religious right fusion, different from his father's libertarian-tea party fusion. Also, not a lot of mentions about the tea party recently, now that I think about it.

You could explain it for people in this thread who aren't French citizens or familiar with French politics.

I tried looking it up but all I got is "le Pen" is a French nationalist who got close to becoming French president in 2002. If that is what you meant in your vague reference to "not too long ago" then I don't see how this applies to what you're "hoping" will happen with the US and Trump. Trump gets close to becoming US president but falls short?

Might refer to Marie Le Pen, and how the socialists and conservatives got into a rainbow circle to block her party from gaining any seats at all with their meme magic

If we disqualify all US politicians for being dishonest we disqualify all US politicians

If we wanted to root out this kind of "dishonesty" we would basically have to do the following:
Ban politicians who give paid speeches
Ban all political donations above a pretty low level
Ban politicians who have had corporate executive, senior corporate management or legal gigs
Ban politicians who have had union leadership or public advocacy gigs

The second point would probably be a good change but it's not like the package as a whole would create some radically better government.  We'd just replace open "dishonesty" with a different kind of motivated political activism.  The people who end up in leadership positions are those who are driven to spend years of their lives fighting to the top of the heap.  You ban anyone with non-government experience from leadership and all it does it create a more specialized caste of professional politicians.

Jean-Marie Le Pen or Marine Le Pen? Jean-Marie is the dude I found when searching for le Pen, and Marine Le Pen is his daughter, according to wikipedia and internet sources.

Sure, np.
Last month, the French held regional elections. In the first round, it looked like Le Pen's (the daughter) party was going to beat Hollande's socialist party, and Sarkozy's conservatives, and go from being a marginal populist party to being the largest party in France, getting 28% of total votes, gaining majority in many districts.
Then came the second round, in which the French people showed that polls, and their first round vote was just out of general protest, but that in reality they did not want populist right wing to rule at all. Le Pen did not get a majority in any district at all.

So basically what I meant was, perhaps polls show Trump to get many votes now, but if people *really* get to vote, they will come to their senses and not vote him.

If we disqualify all US politicians for being dishonest we disqualify all US politicians

It goes with the job field of trying to satisfy everyone, with people who have self-contradictory beliefs

Doesn't mean they can't do a good job, advertising someone's shit when everyone's shit isn't much more shit than normal

It's the blatant dishonesty with Hillary that gets me.

Like "Fuck the public, they're so dumb they won't even notice when I laugh off this very important question."

Would you rather...covert dishonesty?

I mean, honestly, I really wish that one election-reform guy could get to be President. If we fix these stupid first-past-the-post election systems, I feel like our political system would have some issues solved. Not all of them, mind you, as it still relies on the voting populace not being dumbasses, but at least we wouldn't have quite as many nutjobs.

I do. If someone's going to lie to me I expect a little effort & work put into it. Besides basic respect for my intelligence, there's the pragmatic advantage of the more work they have to put in to each lie, the less porkies they can fit in. When simply flat out lying becomes too easy there's never much point to telling the truth. Not in politics anyways.
