Yeah, Cript's pegged the core problem with your premise. Labor in D&D is based on skill check moreso than real-world productivity.

Although you have to be careful of players who will do anything for more power, just sack their own kingdoms for a +1 to their weapon...
That's not even good munchkinry. Manage your domain properly and you'll eventually have people trying to enhance your equipment just to curry favor.

Just hold enchanters hostage, as that'll never backfire... Right?

The point of characters doing anything for power and enhancing equipment

Seriously though, cackling evil isn't efficient. It's much more useful to tie people to you with bonds of gratitude and loyalty. Fear can work, but only as long as you manage to be the scariest thing around.

Man, maybe you should be a druid. They can summon bears at level three, and start having a permanent bear companion at level 4.

Anyway, I've been fooling around trying to think of what I want to play. And I think probably a sorcerer. Mostly because I was originally going to go beguiler, but I sorta figured that beguilers are sorta like more restricted sorcerers anyway and I can just disarm traps by summoning bunnies or something and throwing them in.

I was thinking of my guy being a Irreverent Karrian sorcerer, who's been forced out of his home because of gambling debts. Looking to the future, I was thinking I'd like to eventually take ether Mage of the Arcane Order or Sandshaper. However, both of those are a bit setting specific. I was wondering Remuthra, if there are any organizations (that a human could join) that would fit for mage of the arcane order and/or if the touchstone feat required for sandshaper could be switched to some equivalent touchstone feat that would exist in the Karrian deserts? (Unless the City of the Dead is actually a place that exists in the Realm of Fog)
As to the first, there are certainly mage orders you could join in Karr. Just write one up and you'd be good. As to the second, just waive the Touchstone requirement.

I'm writing a longer response, but this will have to do for now. As I interpret the Profession rules, it doesn't equate to the money the business makes, but their wages as workers in a business. I do think the Profession checks should influence the size of the catch, though.
There are rules for running a business in the PHB 2, but they make it against impossible to make a profit/not make a loss. They are stupid, and I will not be using them, with Remuthra's okay.

I'll be fixing the numbers based on better assumptions, figured with better math.

Honestly, if you're trying to extract wealth from the sea, fishing is probably not the way to do it. Salt is worth five gold a pound, and firewood is 1cp per 20lbs. As the salt to water ratio for seawater is ~35ppm, so you're looking at around 14 silver per gallon of seawater you process in your brine boiling operation. But short of us angering a bunch of salt mephits in the process, this doesn't sound like much of an adventure.

As long as we don't open a portal to the elemental plane of salt to increase our profits.

This touches on the main problem I faced with the prospect of opening a business: the land required for that kind of venture is expensive, by any book's standard. I can easily afford two canoes, but not a whole building and distillery.

I'm considering not starting this business right now, and waiting until level 4 or so when I have a few hundred gold in disposable income.
So you can have your horse, Kassire.

Well, there's an obvious solution for that: Go sailing to find an island that's either unclaimed or easily taken over. Take it over. Build our crazy money making scheme there.

The primary places to find unclaimed islands, for reference, would be the Castaway Isles and the Coast of Lost Souls. You could also try settling unclaimed land in the South, taking over one of the primitive natives there, or perhaps trying for one of the less-inhabited Broken Isles, though that would be rather difficult, to give the ideas off the top of my head.

Question: What is the "Disposal Zone" and should I be worried about it?

E: Damn it, the bottom part got cut off. Siiigh.

Depends on whether you get near it, and knowledge check please :P.

Looks nice, thanks. Sort of looks like I spilled water on the papers, though :P.

Notably, the world is roughly circular, flat, and bordered by what is essentially the flat-earth model of the edge of the world.

EDIT: The southern portion is cut off, by the way.

I'll make another, better attempt later. Without the bottom getting cut off. :P
