So, what good are barrels of blood?  Should I bother extracting blood or buying it?  What can it be used for?  Should I bother?

They are useless.

Same with barrels of ichor, and barrels of venom.

I'm pretty sure you can dump the blood out, so I guess you could make a puddle of blood on the floor somewhere. Similarly, if you buy gnomeblight and make a pool of it, it apparently does have an effect on gnomes walking through it.

They serve no practical purpose, though.

Prettymuch what the others are saying, barreled blood has no purpose aside from flooding your fortress if you're a person that loves blowing up the caravans...

Oh, but the venom is useful, drop bolts over a puddle of venom and they become poisoned, and will work when shot.

Why don't they make it a source of blood for vampires
Like i wish vampires had some use other then being locking is a room operating levers.

Well, the brits drink warm beer, and there is something called ice coffee, as well as ice tea:)

Some vampire theories (not DF specific) claim it's not actually the blood itself they need, but the life force carried through the blood, and that presumably evaporates as the life force expires, so old blood would lack the essential nutrients... Also, someone has tried to calculate how much blood a human sized vampire would need to get enough calories to sustain itself, and I think the result was something like 20 liters a day, which would require quite a few trips to the john...

Yes, barrelled blood is already spilled, so it loses it's Armok-pleasing potential.
