good health military
« on: December 19, 2014, 02:19:40 pm »

what is considered to be a strong, awesome military... and needlessly large military

i have 5 squads
10 hammerdwarves
10 shortsword dwarves
10 battleaxe dwaves
10 speardwarves
10 crossbow dwaves

and 3 captain of the guards

all of then have high quality steel items and most of them are masters/lords
my pop is 201
is this too much? weak? strong? mediocre?

there is not such a thing as a too strong military in dwarf fortress. your military sounds like could kick some serious goblin ass when used properly.

Colossally large for me.

I never exceed 20 military dwarves, and when they are all legendary and all have good equipment it is enough.

Hell, two legendary militia should be able to take care of a siege by themselves.

don't send your crossbowdwarves in spots to fight alone. don't split your army very much, or else they will swarm and start cutting down your troops. don't try to fight a fire breathing, syndrome bearing or web spitting forgotten beast up close and personal, and fortify your entrance.  these things.

I've honestly barely been attacked, my plaything is really peaceful. the best i had was 11 goblin/20ish troll siege and i only lost 1 guy cause he wondered alone close to them for some weird reason, he got surrounded and still took out 2 trolls

Aye, sounds like a beefy forgotten beast-slaying army... though like others said,
maybe overkill in the extreme for most things.

I've found that 1-2 fully equipped dwarves with level 1-2(novice/adequate)+ in all their military skills
are a match for a lot of things in non-evil biomes [where undead are less common].

My first embark in an 40.1x evil biome was hilariously "fun".
The 3x3 site had an ocean to "protect" the entire west side of the square.
-As soon as the one undead creature that was there immediately was moved from "others" to dead/missing",
 another undead undead would appear.
--Evil weather gas arrived every couple months it seemed like.

I save/restored quite a few times just to see if I could somehow dig/hide down fast enough to avoid horrible doom,
and with that inexperienced embark build, the "starting 7" were always devastated before migrants arrived.

Beware the undead giant moth!
Beware the undead giant hamster!
the undead eagle was easy for some reason.

Lesson learned: embark with a militarily skilled dwarf in evil biomes, or plan to seal yourself underground immediately.
maybe even erect a wall around your wagon and dig down from under it... now that job priorities might let you build stuff fast.

does having a large army deter other races from wanting to attack me?

I've never read anything like that anywhere, but I suppose it is possible.
Maybe they might check the number of "macedwarf", swordlords, spearlords etc. (z menu listing)?
