Women soldiers
« on: December 16, 2014, 04:03:07 pm »

When my population reaches a certain point - about 60 - I have women do all the work and put all the men in the army. Women are best left working because you don't want them to go into battle with their babies.
From a different thread.

Any one else see a problem with this?  It's not really cool that the women do ALL the work and the men hang around and wrestle with each other.

Makes perfect sense, not blaming Deboche don't want babies going into battle.  Might even reflect specific  historical cultures but not all of them maybe not any of them. http://aidanmoher.com/blog/

Any way you look at it it's rabidly sexist.  If we can have dragons then we can have women warriors even if you believe they never existed.  If we have gelded animals to reflect animal reproduction, than we can have day cares for soldiers kids and women soldiers choosing not to get pregnant.

go down to general discussion and join us there.

If people want to run a sexist fort that's their thing though, I don't differentiate between genders for the military, personally. Women carrying their babies into battle and possibly using them as a weapon is badass.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here. Is this meant to be a criticism of DF, or just of the way Deboche runs his fort?

Because regarding DF it's much simpler to just exclude married women or women with infants from military service, rather than all of them.

And regarding Deboche, this is hardly the worst thing that people have talked about doing in their fortresses, and I question whether making a thread about it is really appropriate.

This is tame compared to other ways people run forts. Childcare anyone? Also whats the point, its not like the game is hardcoded to make women less than. You're trying to raise a nonissue based on someone elses decision on how they do a fort. Smells like bait.

So what exactly is the point of this thread? I'm asking because I'm not quite sure. I see a few different potential discussions.

If it's a suggestion for daycares, it should go into the suggestion forums. If it's a discussion of historical culture roles, it would probably be better suited to the general discussion forum. If it's about how other players decide their in-fort roles, then it would probably be better suited to the DF general discussion forum.

If it's a direct reply to the quote you shared, then it may be preferable to keep the conversation in its original thread and respond to them there instead.

Call me sexiest, I prefer practical the only women I allow into my military are lesbians. I've lost 2 fortresses because I relied on female soldiers, they proved terrible at fighting with a baby on the teet and a sword or shield in one hand and not to mention the tantrum spiral after Urist finds out he lost his wife and baby boy to the reanimated corpse of his daughter. As to who works the jobs who ever isn't good enough to serve or who ever comes in with a skill I need.

why would it be sexist to not expose children and childbearers to war?  I guess because you filtered out the lesbians?

In 40.xx it doesn't seem like a thing, but in 34.11 orphaned babies were one of my most heartbreaking events.  I'd even see a few get 'napped right off the battlefield :'(
Never stopped me from enlisting the farmers, however, regardless of sex.  But I would often try to enlist both spouses at once.

I wish there was a way to be able to see the sex of soldiers from the recruiting screen. Much easier than filtering and writing down all of the males, then going through and making sure all recruits are male...

Women only carry babies for a couple of years, after that the toddlers starting chilling in the meeting hall working on their fort domination skills.  Whenever a child birth message happens, just (temporarily) assign the mothers to a permanent training squad.  If they are already Legendary, then just demote them to a civilian hauler/charcoal burner for a couple of years.  You people act as if child birth is some great mystery...

Bah, i've never differenciated between man and woman for my military. If you are stupid enogh to bring your baby in the middle of a battle, it simply means that your genes are not suited for the cruel world of DF. Natural selection.

Moreover, it causes a lot of !!FUN!! and creates beautiful stories of murder and revenge!

And during that time your down x soldiers for 2 years. Soldiers not being able to fight do to a leg missing is understandable and predictable, soldiers missing do to they have a snotling on their breast is random and not acceptable when one can avoid a missing body.

Dwarf Therapist.
I never use therapist, also it would still cull my recruitment pool from "useless dwarves" to "useless dwarves with no chance of ever having children"

Also...
Women only carry babies for a couple of years, after that the toddlers starting chilling in the meeting hall working on their fort domination skills.
From the Wiki:
Most creatures, including dwarves, start out as infants, then after a certain number of years become children, and then finally become adults. For dwarves, childhood starts after reaching one year of age, and continues until age twelve.

They only carry them for a year, and with how sparse sieges are these days chances are there won't even be a battle during the time the baby is being carried around.

This thread raises several questions.

Namely:
