Armor wear - just created, but worn out?
« on: December 16, 2014, 01:20:04 pm »

So, I've got my adamantine processing up and running full-steam.  8)  However, just as my Great Armorsmith is churing out complete armor sets for my military, I noticed that about three Adamantine Breastplates and one Adamantine Helm have appeared in the stockpile already showing wear.  To my knowledge, no dwarf has ever equipped these items, merely transported them to the main stockpile.

From what I understood from the wiki, armor doesn't wear out, right?  The dwarfs can run around all day in armor that won't degrade.  I can conceive that armor can show wear if used in combat situations, but no dwarf has ever equipped, much less battled in these new pieces.  I have not even had a battle event nor a fight in the time these were forged.

Is this a bug, or is there some mechanic I'm not aware of?   ???

Armor will wear out through damage, which, afaik, is only done through the two extremes of temperature, BDs, or refuse stockpiles.  Check where you are storing the armor.

Is it in magma :P
Is it in some frigid hell?
Is it in a corpse or refuse stockpile?

Do you have any utility programs running wonky scripts?  DFHack or w.e.

There are no special circumstances involving the armor.  No magma (though, using a magma forge) or water, and I'm in a temperate latitude.  The stockpile is a general one that accepts and distributes to others.  There is refuse allowed in it, but only bones and hair/wool, no corpses or body parts, etc., and nothing rotten.  Does all this sound on par?

There you go.  Refuse stockpiles can automatically damage and decay anything in it, which is a bit of a problem when you set more than just trash to go into it.

don't set your trash to be stored in the same stockpiles as other things.

I will take your tip and relocate the refuse.  Also, I think I found a contributing factor: a degraded helm just showed up in the stockpile along with a pile of vomit.  I'm guessing vomit can do the trick?

I don't know of any science done on vomit and item degradation, but I wouldn't mind it if some could.

FYI: No other items in this stockpile have suffered degradation, including steel and iron armor sets.  It seems, so far, to only been applied to the adamantine products.

I wonder if this has something to do with the adamantite thread being degraded before you wafer it for metal production.

Nope. Only certain types of things decay. Rock boulders, for instance, will not decay in a refuse pile, but clothing and armor definitely will.

Most likely you have multiple stockpiles next to each other. You cannot "add" tiles to an existing stockpile, and if you try to draw a new stockpile over an existing stockpile, the existing stockpile tiles are not added to the new stockpile. If your armor was in a stockpile with refuse enabled, it would have decayed.
