Fountainchants: Returning to Armok's Sweet Embrace
« on: December 15, 2014, 12:20:26 am »

So I'm coming back to Dwarf Fortress, having not played since the days of 34.11, and I'm gonna post my progress here. Lets see what happens.

In spring of the year 1051, on the Planet of Soul, in the Land of Breaking, the dwarves of The Trustworthy Arches sent an expedition to start a new fort. Long they journeyed, through many a strange land, until they came upon the Steppe of Harmonizing. Here they decided to establish their new edifice to the glory of dwarf-kind.

Update #1
Spring of 1050
Ok, so I'm gonna start out by building a basic entrance and a farm.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So a simple start to a fortress, everything going nice and smoothly. And... this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I... Don't understand how that happened. There's no way across the river at all, and dwarfs don't normally swim on their own. He also wasn't forced to dodge into the river. Is my dwarf so stupid he accidentally became four-dimensional briefly? Bugger me if I know.

I also saw a giant sponge get killed by an alligator. Apparently they can die now?

Also... Alligators in the river. Yes. I've heard they're wonderful for egg production, and I can use them as scaly meatshields!

Spring report, 1050: Expedition Leader Adil Furnacevessel
With great fortune, we found a wonderfully defensive spot to strike the earth! There's a river with an easily defensible canyon, with a deep valley to the west with abundant trees and plantlife. Carving out the entrance and digging the farms went smoothly, with the single hitch of a dwarf... Somehow ending up on the other side of the river. Note to self: He can be the first to "Experiment" with taming the local alligators! If there's one thing I believe in as a modern dwarf, it's natural selection, and he just chose himself for some species improvement! Ok, I'm getting damn tired of sleeping under these dumb trees. Screw giving the miners a break, back to work you slackers!

I've had that happen. My dwarfs just ran over the water like nobodies business when the game started to get to a massive magnetite cluster.

Yup.

Yup.

That's... Incredibly odd.  :o Well, my dwarf sat around for a while complaining of hunger, which would have made me feel a tad sympathetic if he hadn't been sitting right next to a load of passion fruit bushes.

Update #2
Summer of 1050
Continued getting basic living requirements set-up. It takes a while with only two pickaxes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ok, so this session is mostly spent waiting on my dwarfs to decide that mining is more important than sleeping. For weeks at a time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After I got that set up and started feeling it with food and sweet passion fruit wine, I put 6 cage traps in the entrance hall, just to help prevent snatchers.
By this time it was getting quite late in the summer, so I began digging out some bedrooms.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This update wasn't very productive, mostly due to dwarfs being lazy. But once things get set up it should start speeding up a little.

Overseer Report #2
Summer report 1050, Expedition Leader: Adil Furnacevessel
It's summers like these that make me wish dwarfs knew how to make whips. And no, I don't mean for the usual social reasons. I mean for LAZINESS reasons. My miners continue to sleep on a stone floor. I thought making them dig out the bedrooms last would keep them too uncomfortable to sleep, but noooo.... Must be the passionfruit wine. In any case, they'd better start respecting my orders around here, or I'll make damn sure research is poured into discovering the secret of whips! Absolutely for discipline purposes. Ahem.

I also had a time when they swum all by themselves over a shallow part in the river to fish, and then when an order came for fish to be cleaned at a fishery they suddenly forgot how to swim.

Swimming has always been a bit odd in DF. But that one is quite hilarious.  :P

Don't forget beds, bedrooms mean very little without actual beds to sleep on :P

Update #3
Autumn of 1050

Setting up some simple dining hall and workshop facilities for the most part.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Gonna need workshop space too, I badly need to get production started
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Migrants! So, more bellies to feed, and more hands to put to work. Also, I get some "news" from the surrounding area:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As if piqued by the lack of essential gossip about our neighbors, a dwarf is hit by a mood!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So, not the most eventful of seasons, but we're in the infrastructure phase of the first year, so that's to be expected. Also, my designs are incredibly simple, I know. They're probably not permanent though. I'm getting familiar with the game again before I start doing anything crazy, and I'll eventually embark on some form of megaproject! Also, if you have any thoughts on what I should do/try, then go ahead and let me know.

Overseer Report #3
Autumn report 1050, Expedition Leader: Adil Furnacevessel
The autumn has thus far treated us kindly, as we continue to hew and carve a home in this hillside. We were also "blessed" by the influx of more peasants to serve my honour! Ahem. The honour of dwarfs everywhere I mean. The miners were actually working hard this season, so I have delayed the research of whips for the moment. One of the migrants came up to me and told me he came bearing news of the outside world and then just stood there grinning for a minute, and said everything is the same. I've decided it would be best if he is put to work far away from the other dwarfs. That kind of stupidity may be contagious. Luckily for my sanity it wasn't long after this baffling confrontation that one of the dwarfs started to twitch uncontrollably and babble in a strange tongue, before demanding we construct a forge for him, and supply him with metal! I decided to indulge him, but this had better be worth my damn time.

Oh I may be rusty, but I'm not that rusty.  :P Dwarfs like bedrooms filled with alligators... Right?

Artifact gold axe here we come

I'd absolutely have to theme the entire fort around the old Golden Axe games then.  :P I'm in the process of deciding how to handle a few things that happened for the next update, so you'll have to wait until then to see.  :P

Update #4
Winter of 1050

Quite an eventful season, first off, that artifact was completed:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Straight after that, a werebeast turned up:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He immediately had a furious and fatal confrontation with my hunter, and moved onto...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He doesn't seem entirely thrilled with the situation.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Because he's been rather effectively "scratched" by the werebeast, he'll probably turn into another australia-themed nightmare next full moon. So, I've locked him in a mock "hospital" where he can continue to "lead" the fortress.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The way I see it, we now have a blood-crazed lunatic in charge of the fortress, so in keeping with the theme, it seems right to start working on a megaproject idea:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I used the idea of the fortress being run by an insane kangaroo as inspiration to start a rather audacious project with the fort. You'll see as it develops!

Overseer Report #4
Winter report of 1050, Expedition Leader: Adil Furnacevessel
*Mumbles incoherently* ...Blood, need... Blood. Wait... I had something to say. Yes. I'm still the leader here. I need to focus. Yes... The thing that possessed dwarf decided to create was a bracelet. Perhaps it'll his flesh I tear and eat. Yes..... No wait. Focus. After that... A strange creature showed up, half kangaroo, and half olm-woman. I thought the hunter could subdue it, but it tore straight through the poor sod and then got to me... Ever since it tore my foot apart and bit my head, I've been getting... Hungry... Yes... Now the other dwarfs have sealed me away, they told me I'd be treated, and then... There was a wall. I was trapped. I think they fear me. But they left a small opening, through which they explained that I'm still their leader, even if I'm too dangerous to be let out. Yes... I'll show them what kind of leader I can be... Damn dwarfs didn't protect me, and they've been lazy fools since we started this disastrous fort! It's time to make them do some real work! I'll turn this place into a fortress that will never be forgotten! And then... Maybe I'll be let out, or I'll escape... And there'll be no need to be hungry anymore...

Somehow I thought it was going to be something useless like that.

Was he bitten? Infection only occurs in bites that pierce the skin.
