They have to fight with their iconic weapons, though, so the samurai gets a katana and the knight gets a lance. And while katana is pretty cool, lance is the awesomest melee weapon by far.

What if we switch it up and the knight had to use the katana while the Samurai has to use the broadsword?

They both drop the swords in disgust and go hand-to-hand instead?

This is a broadsword, just to mention.

But D&D doesn't even have broadswords! Well. Not in Core, anyway. Well. Not in 3.5 Core, anyway. Longswords, though.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Would the fight be any different if the samurai teamed up with a ninja and the knight teamed up with a non pacifist Benedictine monk who spontaneously knows martial arts?

Gary Gyagax used a lot of terms that were based on speculation done during the Victorian era, I think.  They used to call all metal armor mail, too.  The term long sword also has similar issues.  I believe short and long sword may have only been names for classifying techniques at the times that they were in use.

sexy knight cosplay
What the fuck. Most of those weren't even knights. I feel cheated and disappointed with the world.

Exactly. European knights can't even get hot girls to cosplay them. Samurai therefore win by a landslide.

My logic is irrefutable.

I think that anyone who knows martial arts for illogical reasons is automatically a protagonist.

... on the other hand, japan itself seems to stick a lot more sexy knights in its media than sexy samurai. I think that's some extra points in knight's favor when the samurai's originating culture has jumped ship.

Though there were a few passingly attractive knight cosplayers if you dug deep enough. It just... took a number of pages to find. To say nothing if you go for something more specific, like Saber cosplay >_>

And actually looking at the samurai search, most of those are ninja anyway. Which is... disturbingly appropriate, actually. Very ninja thing to do.

Heavily Armored Knight: Die, Samurai! I'm going to pulp you to nothingness with my well-forged armor and longsword!

Samurai: I have hot chicks cosplaying me.

Heavily Armored Knight: NO, NOT THE HOT CHICKS!!!! *Dies*
