a thought about Armok
« on: December 03, 2014, 07:24:34 pm »

In a time before time, the god of blood created the universe on a colossal anvil, and then molded the first dwarves with earth, blood, and magma. He also molded the other races out of mud and dust, but he was less than pleased with them. Then He sat back, and as the universe grew older and more peaceful, He grew bored.

He called his children around Him, and said. "Dwarves. This universe grows boring. I will remake it on the forge of creation, unless it becomes less boring"

The dwarves were obviously terrified. And then Urist, the firstborn and the bravest of them, had an idea. He asked His god how could they possibly make the universe less boring for Him.

So He gave His chosen people, the dwarves, their holy mission : to make this world a world of everlasting conflict, so He may escape divine boredom. He gave them their tools of war : the axe, the hammer, the floodgate and the lever, so they may shed blood and magma in His name.

Dwarves worship the stone and earth that surrounds them. Each strike of the pick is a psalm, and each tunnel is a sacrament.

Dwarves worship the fiery magma that they were made of. Magma is a purifying force and therefore they pour it on elves, kobolds, goblins and other less worthy creatures.

Dwarves also worship blood, as one of the elements of life, and shed the blood of lesser creatures because it pleases Him, else the universe will be set upon the anvil of creation to be reforged.

Everything a dwarf does is to please Him.

The song of the pick and of the battle axe is music to His ears. The magma-charred corpse of an elf is food to His hunger. The spilled lifeblood of goblins is drink for His insatiable thirst.

PRAISE ARMOK ! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD !

Armok is male, since His avatar is on bay12 and he selected "male"

Besides, dwarves = the creation of armok U dwarves = beards therefore armok = beards.

So armok is indeed male.

But even then, it wouldn't make a difference if it was male or female.

In fact I bet Armok is sexless, possibly male-identifying, and we see him as male but technically he ain't.

Plenty of precedence for the idea of female Dwarves having beards.  Vanilla DF female Dwarves don't have beards, but the instructions for adding them are right in the raws.

That said, Armok is not in the game world (despite being in the title).  The lore spawned in the forums is that he is the one who forges game worlds, but creatures within the world are completely unaware of this because in-world "gods" distract people from the true nature of their universe.

(I could also shamelessly plug the mod in my signature which deals with some of the consequences of forging life "upon the anvil of the world".)

Note, however, that the main function of DF gods is to turn creatures into vampires and werewolves, give secrets to necromancers, and raise demons up from the underworld.

In other words, the gods exist specifically to create conflict, and they can therefore be seen as the will of Armok manifest.

Perhaps the in-game deities are just aspects of Armok, the way creator-gods often do in many religions. Heck, even Christianity has the Trinity. I'd say something similar is at play here, and as such Armok is a genderless, formless omniscient godhead that can manifest itself in multiple ways.

In this view, in-world deities are no more facets of Armok than any other created creature.  That some of the created creatures worship others might be Armok's intentional design or just a bug.

No one ever said Armok was infallible.

If Armok is omnipotent, he is infallible, since he would be able to avoid all bugs. All things we perceive as mistakes must thus far intended.

If Armok wants me to do a better job then I request the following things: catapults that can launch cages/blood barrels/corpses, blood and other liquids that function as "real" liquid (7/7 depth and flow), and some explosive powder to pack into metal barrels or custom-built metal 'cannon' enclosures ;)

im want the magic artifacts to be top priority, along with ins an taverns. I really want to get an artifact magic fire sword made of bone or metal (preferably not silver but I would take it if it was) decorated with a single gold opal and an image of something cool in the metal (and maybe an image of fire in the opal)
