okay, how about we take it like that: let's suppose that a slave is worth 10 times the money he could make in a year if he was free. for example an average farmer with enough seeds  could plant and gather, say, 10 plump helmets per season, therefore 40 plump helmets per year, so 400 plump helmets in 10 years. 400x2=800 urists. it's not historically accurate, but sounds a lot more sensible.

if this wasn't strictly against dwarf ethics I would use it to sell children.

But then you have to pay  differently per job because getting a metalworker to make<<+Steel Giant Serrated Blade+>> s for a whole year would let you buy your whole civ.

it has its flaws and holes, sure. but i still believe that something along those lines would be the best bet for anyone who wants to mod in slavery.

Are we actually making slavery now? I know we hunt Elves for sport, slaughter Goblins, and go on mass-murder sprees, but slavery?

If we have justified Slavery, I think we've crossed the line, even if this is a computer program and no one is actually hurt or suffering. It just feels wrong.

i wouldn't argue with that. just to be perfectly clear, i do not justify it and i am truly sorry if somebody took it that way. for that matter, i am sure nobody else on this topic tries to justify it. we just started talking about a quirk k33n noticed, then it got derailed and then derailed again it seems.

Okay, thank goodness. I just personally always found slavery appalling. However, as this is a game, it's quite amusing that we could have always just sold off those nobles, unwanted children, and useless migrants nobody wanted.

yeah, the idea of treating a human being like an animal just so you don't have to pay a salary is horrific.

However, as this is a game, it's quite amusing that we could have always just sold off those nobles, unwanted children, and useless migrants nobody wanted.

it's cleaner and more profitable than throwing them into a pit with angry badgers (though in terms of hilarity, badger coliseum wins :D), but then there's the issue that you have to set up a whole system to get them in cages.

Hey, I wonder what happens when we trade the Urists off to the Elves.

Now, a song of all the ways to kill Dwarves (would you really want to sell them when you can do these)?

Magma Pits
Shredded to bits!
Torn limb from limb
Hammered at whim!
Forgotten Beasts
Tantrum at a feast!
Trap hall
Crushed by a maul!
Mermaid trade
Goblin blade!
Dwarven Boilers*
SPOILERS!

*A Dwarven Boiler uses magma to heat up a room of water and boil it's occupants. It can also be powered by a cauldron of lit bituminous coal or lignite, but it is quite difficult to set up.

It is shockingly asinine to suggest that slavery is any worse then the more intense aspects of dwarf fortress.

edit: not to mention that slavery is already a big thing for humans and goblins.

I welcome slavery, even if I dont much think Id use it.  Slavery would make community forts interesting, and how they work for sieges/adventure mode also sound cool.

Can you say sappers? :P

---

It is kind of interesting to think that dwarf on dwarf slavery would be appealing to a player.  Or is it all slavery?  Because goblins already have hundreds of slaves.  And humans keep a few too.

It depends on what kind of slavery too...
Our traditional slavery is using sentients as work animals.
I know about how slavery was ruled in the bible, and it was more like the last option of a man with no resources or anything. He would work as a slave for seven years and then be freed from his master, along with something for him to get another try at life, likely some cattle and an amount of money for buying a smal place for himself. Slavery like this seems very humane for me, even better than our actual "let them rot in the streets" approach for miserable people.

The bible also condones war rape, so I am glad that DF isn't based on it...

Also, there were intellectual slaves in antiquity, specifically in the Roman Empire. I don't know how this would be implemented in DF and don't think it needs to be given dwarven law and ethics.

Are there any Goblin or Human fortress mods that attempt to add a slavery mechanic?
