Praise wooden shields.
Ah, I waste all those candies on shields.

Unless you want some speedster, a candy shield is just a waste. I just ran a test, ten duel shielding full iron and wolverine leather layered dwarves versus twenty iron armed goblins, and the dwarves won, mostly with heads exploding in gore. This is nothing compared to my other duel wielding squads, but they got out completely injury free, and actually performed better than the shield and mace squads.

One advantage of metal shields - they don't catch fire. That may or may not be important, but I'm a paranoid sort, so I equip all my squads with masterwork copper shields. The extra weight doesn't seem to slow them down all that much when added on top of full metal armor, and in any case, military dwarves are stronk and learn Armor User (though I'm not 100% certain it applies to shield weight).

It doesn't.
Edit:
Wait, wooden shields catch fire? I have never witness this... Do it needs some special circumstances?  I never fought a dragon outside adventure mode, aways prefer caging and training them, bur my shields wouldn't catch fire, nor melt down with dragonfire.

They do catch fire as an item when not being used to block things, though.

It'd be a shame for a single burning hauler to burn your entire fort's shield supply, yes?

The item burning thing happens tough, a random cave critter snuck into the fortress ballista arrow supply and the trained dragon happily set the hell out it all ablaze. The thing keeps burning forever! (well, for a long time.)

I've had a few dwarves burn to death, so I'm not taking any chances here. I just know that if a dwarf finds himself a proud owner of a !!walnut shield!!, he'll stoically burn to a sad little pile of ashes rather than let it go. And he'll probably pass it to the nearest squadmate too, as a friendly gesture. If dwarves ever invent sports, that's how they'll open the very first Olympics.

@smeeprocket: You can make minecarts out of lead. They can then either be used as ammunition in a minecart rail gun, or dropped on enemies from above. Bonus points if you load them up with heavy stones like cinnabar.

Wooden shields and burning: Well, if you want burning (and melting) implemented, maybe those invulnerable wooden (and ice) walls might be in danger too.

Invulnerable wooden walls? Wooden walls? For dwarves? How dare they! No true dwarf would ever rely on wooden walls for defence, and they should suffer by having them catch fire.

As for ice walls, they should melt when close to heat. What's wrong with stone anyway?

You fail to consider that wooden walls are made from chopped down trees. Chopping down trees is fairly dwarven.
The problem with stone is that it tends to be a bit distant when you're expanding your courtyard. Stone blocks work, however, but you then have to dedicate one or more masons to block cutting. You can also make your walls out of soap if you want to get weird...
I use stone blocks when securing the caverns, though.

I was a little too harsh. Still, indestructible wooden walls should go. Fire should burn them, though it can be extinguished if Urist Fireman is not attending a party or on break, and titans and mega beasts should just smash through them if they are only 1 tile thick.

I agree, materials like wood, and copper, and other weak substances, when put in a wall, should be smash able by building destroyers.
