The material of a shield
« on: November 25, 2014, 01:42:28 pm »

Does it still matter in 40.18? I remember that it had absolutely no effect in 34.11, and I want to know if it's still the case.

I want to know this because even though I explicitly assigned metal shields to all of my soldiers, half of them appear to be wielding metals shield while the other half actually have wooden shields. This is also probably a bug.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

As far as i know the material of a shield has no effect on the amount of damage a dwarf deflects by blocking a attack, if something is blocked by a shield all the damage is deflected. Or the rate at which he blocks, shields get 20% chance of a block and that amount gets modified by the shield user skill. The only part where the material of the shield matters is when the dwarf uses it to bash his opponent. Shields made from denser material will work better for bashing. The drawback is the extra weight, this is why many players go with wooden shields because the bash attack doesn't do all that much in a fight and they value the mobility of their military dwarfs over it.

Bash attacks don't even train sheild skill, so they aren't very impressive.

As people said over there, heavy metal shield would block the same way a normal wooden shield would, but they're heavier and their bash attack is much more deadlier. With much more, i mean they're still useless but less useless, but the shield's weight will actually slow you down and you don't want that. Praise wooden shields.

Shield bashing uses and trains the Misc. Object User skill.

Although it's probably not worth the extra weight if it puts the dwarf past an encumbrance break point, a shield made of steel will greatly outperform one made of featherwood when it comes to bashing. Generally this doesn't mean much in an average combat but if the dwarf loses his weapon it can quickly become the difference between a haphazard victory and a grueling death.

I had a squad of duel-shielders in my fort one time, with a guy using a lead plus a platinum shield up front. Trust me, with a good shield, they can be deadly. I saw a decapitation with the platinum shield.

Dual shield-ing protects your dwarves really well, but it doesn't kill all that quickly.

I learned the hard way that shields are the best way to survive dragon fire.

Also that forests can burn for a very long time and nothing slows a forest fire down.

They were artifacts. Very treasured artifacts. My sword and shield using adventurer had to go one shield hit, one sword slash, so the steel artifact long sword and platinum shield artifact were godsends.

I use steel shields now that movement/attack speed got split so it doesn't really affects more than the time it takes to engage the enemy, and shield bashes seem to throw goblins around from time to time... I don't know if the quality of the shield is still irrelevant, though.

Personally I think wood shields should catch fire unless they are coated with leather or hide, as many historical shields were. Metal shields should have slower attack speed and cause more fatigue, but be more durable.

That'll probably be implemented when/if item damage and rust is.
