Every time I try to make a serious SG, the main character always ends up being a catgirl dancer with outdated artillery. I am not sure a serious SG is even possible.

I don't know what you mean by that, but this has currently happened to 100% of my SGs. So statistics say that literally all SGs must have, at some point, a catgirl with old style artillery and no seriousness. It is only science.
