Question on preferences
« on: November 12, 2014, 07:38:55 pm »

When a dwarf prefers a tree (say, macadamia trees), that is distinct from them liking macadamia wood, correct? In other words, would Urist gain any benefit from having a macadamia tree wood bed in his room if his preference was for the tree specifically?

You could put his bedroom next to a macadamia tree. You'd have to put it "underground" but windows let you see outside...

But no, I don't think that it would help, if he likes that type of tree, he'll probably go all elvish on you and be sad it was cut down.

Yeah if it says tree and not wood, he probably likes to gaze upon an unchopped tree.

What if, you build a tree house for him?

In all likelihood, there'll be no effects at all apart from the dwarf liking to depict macadamia trees when creating artistic images (engraving, some decorations).

Preferences for living trees shouldn't be any different from preferences for animals - the mere presence (or death) of a liked animal causes no particular feelings.

That's not normal presence, it's a special case that only holds for animals in built cages. Dwarfs who like dogs don't give a shit about free-roaming (and probably also chained) dogs.

I guess we'll need potted plants including bonsai trees.

A dwarf in one of my older forts was "comforted by a lovely creature", and bee is the animal he liked...
