He is. He did grow up near a place of research and spent a lot of time there, so I'm sure he's picked it up.

also the only illiterate character I ever played was Jorund because I literally can't imagine what it's like to not be able to read

SC I think that first staircase is blocked off, you'll need to go to the one further along? Though you might wanna poke at the chest since it's been omplied we maybe don't need lockpicks since we don't have any of those anyways.
