Non-Pay2Win card game for the PC
« on: November 04, 2014, 12:58:57 pm »

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a collectable card-game style game (like Magic:the Gathering) for the PC  - I certainly don't mind having to buy it, but all the ones I've looked at have been pretty much P2W or at the very least a lot of transactions to get the full game out of it. I know that's sorta the nature of the beast, but I wondered if anyone knew of anything that had more RPG-like unlocking, rather than just paying.

I've also been playing a mobile game called Evoker and it has a nice mix of RPG elements (cards levelling up, a single player where you can find more cards) and online battling, but it's rather simplistic and is a bit P2W (or heavy grind). I'm ok with a grind too, I just don't want it to be '20 hours or $3'.

I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions - I don't mind how old or if they're slightly away from the standard formula either.

Collectible-card games have always been PTW, even in physical-card format.

However, once upon a time Microprose made a M:TG game, which includes older cards only because of when it was made, but for multiplayer has everything unlocked so you can make anything you want. You'd likely have problems trying to get it to work, though, and even worse issues trying to get the multiplayer to function.

There are also things like OCTGN, which is a (open-source, apparently) virtual table top program. There are all kinds of games that exist for that. (I've used it before, and it works fairly well, or at least it did when I used it last)

There is Draconian Wars isn't P2W, but its not very good.

Later on there will be Faeria, which looks semi-promising despite the lousy name.

The pickings are slim, since CCG's are practically designed to extract money from humans.

Too true. I've stayed well clear of them after Pokemon and a brief MTG stint, as it just seems like the biggest money sink.

Faeria looks great though, I'll definitely keep an eye on that!

I'd just like to point out one I came across: Spectromancer (http://www.spectromancer.com/). I did play 'Astral Masters' by the same company at one point - very much a sort of logic/duelling game and not really a CCG in the traditional sense (as everyone has similar cards) but fun for online duelling.

No idea how it is since I've never played it, but Blizzard's "Hearthstone" is a thing.

There's a flash version of one of the Spectromancer game :
http://www.kongregate.com/games/fighter106/spectromancer-gathering-of-power

It's not too bad and is rather balanced , while unlike so many ccg, not taking any money from the player.

There's Cockatrice for Magic the Gathering.
It has no rules enforcement though, or rather it's the same as the physical game. It's kinda tedious :P

There's also a free Heroes of Might and Magic tcg on Steam. Forgot what it's called though.

LackeyCCG has some physical card games represented digitally, like Vampire: The Eternal Struggle (formerly known as Jyhad)

Mage wars is pretty fun, you can play it over OCTGN for free and have access to all of the cards. I guess that game isn't really a TCG. OCTGN also supports a lot of other ones though and has a semi-present userbase.

There was another card gaming platform which let you build decks with every magic card imaginable (but you had to load the card files up yourself) and play MTG with others using the honor system. As in I won't fuck with your cards and make illegal moves if you don't, even though both of us could. Uhh.. I can't remember what that program was called. It might have been LackeyCCG or something else.

If you care more about playing the game and building a deck than actually collecting cards, http://www.duelingnetwork.com/ is pretty good.

It's a bit complicated.

As far as RPG unlocking goes, it's pretty good. You get in-game currency by completing daily quests (destroy x minions, win x games as class or other class), which you can then use to buy booster packs of five cards each. One's guaranteed to be "Rare" (Tier 2 of 4), the rest have a predictably steep probability of being anything from Common (Tier 1/4) to Legendary (Tier 4/4). If you don't like what you get, you can also disenchant your cards into dust, then use the dust to craft any card you like, with the obvious caveat that the exchange rate is terrible and gets even worse for higher rarities.

And that's where you kind of hit a snag, because it has the usual card game habit of higher rarities tending to be better. Certainly not exclusively, and often "better" is rather situational, but a deck with nothing but default cards in it will usually be worse than one that was able to stuff some legendaries in there. So until you get some better, typically rarer cards in there, your decks aren't necessarily going to be awful, but they'll have a tendency to lose against someone who's able to suddenly pull a dragon out of nowhere.

Now, it does have a matchmaking system, so strictly speaking this shouldn't bother you if it doesn't bother you. You're not going to get constantly rolled by people with overpowered decks unless you're constantly beating people with overpowered decks in between. But it does tend to feel obnoxious, when you're having a nice duel with somebody and then lose because they suddenly pull out a card that's just better than yours for its cost.

Overall, I'd recommend it. It's a neat game, and other than having to register and install it's not like there's any harm giving it a shot.

Infinity Wars is pretty decent.

I've got about ten hours put into it. It plays somewhat differently than most CCGs but it has some similarities to some of the bigger hitters. Mana is gained 1 per turn like Hearthstone. You have 100 life instead of the usual 20 (or whatever) but creatures tend to hit much harder. They're also easier to buff up. You've also got Morale to worry about which is lost when creatures are defeated; it keeps swarm decks from being too crazy.

Cards come fairly frequently; you get them for playing through the single player campaign mode (which is quite extensive -- lots of single player content) as well as from logging in (you get a free card every day). Beyond that, you can also buy cards on the in-game store -- doing so takes a while, though. Packs are fairly expensive and the normal currency comes somewhat slowly, at least in the early game which I'm still floating around in.

Also, all the cards are animated. It's a gimmick, but the majority of them are pretty well done and fun to look at.
