Little funfact about dead dwarves
« on: October 23, 2014, 01:18:42 pm »

You can view their status as if they were still alive if you check them through living relationships.

For some reason being dead translates into the upper body being gone by the game.

One is really dead only when all who know him have died.

That's deep, too deep... horrifying screams come from the darkness below!

Well, I know that I've never lived through having my upper body removed, and I suspect that you haven't either.  But it's interesting that even death by, say, poisoning would lead to the same upper-body-is-gone status.

By dwarf fortress standards you are you upper body. Everything else is just an optional add-on.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

Rip some hardware from your PC while it's on and see what happen.

The head (specifically the brain) controls the Upper body. If you have no control of the upper body, you are a dead man/woman on the ground. Simple as that.

EDIT: Also, why has no one argued over what is actually gone if you are cut in half at the waste? Is the upper body gone or the lower body gone?

You know how it only says your right arm is gone when you lose the arm? You are actually missing your entire body when you are dead, but because the upper body is the base of the body it only says your upper body is gone.

Still, isn't it just as correct to say that their lower body is gone if they have been chopped in two pieces?

Well, it's all about where you consider your body to start from.

Personally, I believe head to be the only relevant body part, so i refer to beheading as torso amputation. Urist McCoroner seems to think it's upper body from which all the body expand outward.

technically, the head IS part of the upper body.

The body is just a frame which the manipulation and propulsion modules are mounted on, while the head is the control interface for the beard.

The upperbody gets removed, I presume, because of the  necromancy bit.  UBs are required for some necromancy.  When you play about with syndromes and interactions, the UB is the part that remembers its former factions and loyalties.

technically, the head IS part of the upper body.

Im not actually sure if the head is also missing, tbh.
