((From wikipedia:
Quote
Similarly, passive systems - electronic countermeasures, decoys, chaff, flares, barrage balloons - are not considered point-defence.
Same would go for armor systems, I think. But that might just be a case of semantics. If 'point defense' as used in this game includes systems such as these, then yes, it can make sense. It's be more accurate to include it as it's own category, but eh, semantics right?))

((Point defense usually refers to a targeted launch or firing of something to counter. With both kinetic and missiles, you want to engage those from several hundred thousand kilometers away to have any real chance at deflecting them. Launch a chaff canister, fire a missile, shoot a shell, shoot a beam~))

((But yahs, probs just a case of semantics~))

Partial defense now means taking the square root of it, taking a cue from GalCiv2.

Year 1, Q3~4
The citizens of Earth mourn the tragic passing of a pair of brave Scout pilots associated with the nation of Kasselyn, killed in action whilst defending themselves from an alien menace unknown til now. The Council extended its regrets to the families of the deceased, emphasizing that none of us would have known without their sacrifice. Some organizations expressed the opinion that ... (headlines of the Associated Press Global Paper)

Pelsk of Cruaraea
With a steady roar, a Colonizer Alpha vectors away from the Earth Orbital Docks, putting distance between it and the system before engaging faster than light travel, blinking out.

The colonizer ship lands on Pelsk Bravo/Vili with no incident, and immediately starts setting up a mining and refining base. Income is +10 credits a turn, and can be improved via technology Enhanced Unmanned Mining.

Pelsk orders one Fighter, model name Impasser built. Its sleek form can be seen in the Orbital Docks, ready for whatever the universe can throw at it. It only cost 15 credits, too.
He spends 10 credits scanning the skies of Pelsk Bravo. He discovers two potential systems to explore. They are named BrushThirdTotal and MilkHumanSomewhere for now. The first system is 0.99 standard FTL units away, and the second 0.17 FTL units away.

Finally, he sets one of his spare facilities to researching Point Defences, spending 15 credits.

He gains 50 credits from colonies, for a net gain of 10 credits

Zhakarov of the Euroslavic Federation decides that to take care of the threat of aliens, he must use all his resources to try to close the technological gap. He sets his facilities to research both Larger Vessels and an Extra Trait, spending 15 and 25 credits respectively. The former technology requires one more turn of research, the latter two.

Zhakarov recalls his two ships to Sol, but they are too slow to scan the system after arriving (speed 0.5, distance 0.5).
Finally, he spends 10 credits to scan Sol system again, and discovers that it may be possible to colonize Jupiter and the asteroid belt, if he has Enhanced Unmanned Mining.

Zhakarov gains 40 credits from Earth, for a net loss of 10 credits in his balance.

Amelia of Kasselyn does not dispatch the Colony Ship to Pelsk Bravo's Vili, because Pelsk has already colonized it.

She sets her research facilities to work on Improved Ion Drives and Point Defense. By the end of the year, the labs report a breakthrough on ion drive technology. It is now possible for all provinces of Earth to construct ships that utilize the Linear Ion Engine, including the Phoenix light fighter. However, larger ships cannot be built without other technological advances. The Phoenix A is equipped with two Linear Ion Engines instead of the Ion Pulse Engines of the Impasser, allowing it to have twice the hull, take twice the beating, and sacrifice none of the 0.66 FTL speed. Because no improvements in weapons technology have occurred, it still equips the 570nm Pinion Lasers. Advances in weapons technology will allow better weapons.

Collaborating with the labs of Pelsk, a new defense system is developed. Point Defense systems use lasers to intercept Missiles. However, they are too weak to deflect kinetic masses effectively (they do provide some benefit), and the phase interference required to block beam weapons is likewise difficult. The Phoenix A now is equipped with Point Defense.

All this research comes at the cost of 45 credits.

Kasselyn gains 44 credits from Earth, ending up with a net loss of 1 credit.

Fletcher of the Titanian Republic immediately orders his scouts to disengage. The Alien Scout doesn't seem to bother chasing his Scouts home. In fact, it doesn't even attempt to take them out with a potshot. Hmm...

He, too, concentrates on research over production, putting credits into Shields and Missiles (15 credits each).

Shields are now available to mankind! They work by diffusing energy across the entire shield, and therefore are extremely effective against beam weapons. They are not so effective verses missiles and kinetic masses, but it's better than nothing.

The Scout M1b is now available! For 5 more credits (10 for Fletcher), Scouts have a 0.5 shield to prevent them from being oneshotted by Alien Scouts. Any existing Scout M1as may be upgraded for 5 credits (10 for Fletcher) at a manned colony or Earth.

The Phoenix B is also available. Instead of Point Defense, it equips a 0.5 shield. It doesn't matter much, though, because its weapons cannot hurt Alien Scouts.

Fletcher gains 40 credits from Earth and spent 30 on research, ending with a net gain of 10 credits.

Pelsk may choose to give control of Pelsk Bravo/Vili to Amelia at any time.

((Question though: what kinda ranges are we dealing with here? Realistic space distances, or low sci-fi spitting distance?

Because, in the case of defeating kinetic projectiles for example, even a very small course alteration will suffice to make the projectile miss.

Oh, and now that I think of it, chaff against beam weapons might be rather impractical, as opposed to just coating your ship with whatever reflective material you're using every x cm of armor. For starters, you cannot use your own beam weapons while the curtain is up, and if the enemy moves in an unexpected vector they might be able to still hit you by shooting around the chaff curtain. ))

Did we manage to get Missiles this turn? Also, does refitting a ship take up an industry slot?

Amelia held up her side of the deal.

Pelsk splits control of Vili with Amelia.

Research Railguns.
Build Colonizer.

Send Fighter from Earth to MilkHumanSomewhere.
Send Scout from Pelsk Bravo toward BrushThirdTotal.
