This is better publicity than spending 1 million on advertising.
No kidding. Probably better than 10 million.

I'm kinda torn between upvoting the game to spite Valve for taking it down, and upvoting what's probably just a bad game, or not, and tacitly condoning Valve for yoinking it. It feels like Presidential elections, but petty.

Wanna know who put Hatred back on Greenlight?

The Gaben himself

Yesterday I heard that we were taking Hatred down from Greenlight. Since I wasn’t up to speed, I asked around internally to find out why we had done that. It turns out that it wasn’t a good decision, and we’ll be putting Hatred back up.
I'd really like to know who's responsible for that decision, but eh, at least Gaben doesn't approve of it.

You heard it here first folks, Gaben descended from on high to restore the murder simulator.

I don't really know much about Gaben or just why he's so revered by just about everyone (asides from the fact that he is Valve), but this makes me like him. I'll vote for this just as soon as I can get Steam to load on my computer, so... about half an hour, probably. :P

Ah, the feeling of being on the same side as Gaben accidentally.

Hallowed be the name of Gaben, for he has shown his mercy and restored Hatred to it's place.
Now kneel in reverence before your icons of valve and thus speak 3 times "Half-Life 3 confirmed!" while wearing the sacred number of three hats on you head.
Thus your sins shall be forgiven.
 :P

But in all seriousness i'm curious what he considered non-sufficient reason?

Meh, I really don't blame whoever made the decision to remove it from greenlight.

Would you want a game that's literally made to create as much controversy and bad publicity to be on your platform?

Steam has literally started selling visual novel erotica, half-finished Kickstarter games, and actual scams. Hatred is by far the stupidest target if you wanted to reform Steam to ye olden days of aristocratic gaming quality and the might of the British Empire. I haven't slept in 20 hours.

I didn't say anything about the quality of the game, mind you. Sure, steam has a lot of shitty games, but do any of those shitty games actively attempt to create as much controversy as possible?

If you were an average PR dude or something, looking through all these greenlight games, and you come upon that, what would you do?

Not saying that it's right, but it's understandable.

Yep. I'd say Air Control is an example of something being intentionally bad while promising something different, and things like Mountain Simulator are examples of being plain shit. They're things that gained publicity by being intentionally awful, and they had a lot less effort put into them than Hatred looks to have.

And again, distributing this is not fine, but distributing something that did the exact same thing over a decade ago (Postal 1) is?

Yes. I would. So IMO the problem is not that Hat of Redness (EVERY time I see the title of that game in the context of the game, I have the compulsion to read it as 'Hat... Red.', as dumb as it is) is restored but that all the REST of the utter, unadulterated crap is not taken down. Steam feels less like a shop, IN DA INTERWEBZ! and more like a landfill, IN DA INTERWEBZ, burying the good games under a mountain of crap in the hopes someone will make the mistake of buying some of said crap.

This game looks like it has a neat system, with cool physics stuff, and will probably be pretty fun. I'd probably feel a lot better getting it when it comes out if it weren't so god damn edgy.

I seriously could not say this better myself.

I honestly feel like the majority of the complaints about people complaining of the game are actually heavily inflating the outrage. I've seen far fewer people complaining about the game, much less calling for it to be banned/cancelled/etc than I have people complaining about people complaining.
