This door...Nikolai approached the big ornate door, with its intrincate design almost imperceptibly broken.

This door is supposed to be sealed. It was made to be unbreakable, the things behind it are too dangerous. But if it's open it means-Nikolai went to open the door, but it opened backwards, throwing the old man a distance away. From beyond the door a blob of darkness engulfed the group, and when it retracted, the door closed itself and Nikolai was now alone.
