Vault Metal Artifacts (Spoilers)

So I want to get metal weapons from a vault so I can melt them down and force my metalsmiths to use them for moods, but I don't know where to find the vault.

Is there an easy way to do this? I would prefer to not make a new world, but if I have to I will.

Legends mode. Be prepared to die in seconds though. It may take multiple embarks to get a couple dwarves under ground and sealed.

Well, I was planning on using an adventurer to grab the weapons, then carry them to a retired fortress nearby. That would work, right?

And the problem is, I tried legends mode and couldn't find the vault's location... Are you sure it works?

It works. I found one, embarked on it, and died in the same minute. I... I don't know. I've never tried that. There is the possibility some goblins will steam roll the fort while your adventurer either god-mods his way through the angels, or layers iron, tons of companions, and is a necromancer+vampire+thrall. Angels are demons with 40% as good as adamantine equipment.

I tried legends mode and couldn't find the vault's location
The way I did it was like this:
1- Export legends to XML
2- Open the xml document and find the vault you want to raid.
2.5 - It should look like this:
Spoiler: stuff (click to show/hide)
3- Open dwarf mode and move the embark area to those coordinates. (IIRC they start at 0,0 in the top left corner.)
4- Move the local area cursor thingy around until the "e"mbark option turns gray.
5- That place you can't embark on is the vault.

From there you can take a screenshot and try to find it in adventure mode.

Okay, thank you Migue. I'll do that.

Going to just shaft of enlightenment myself, and make full steel armour, to kill all the angels. Shouldn't be too difficult...
(Cheating because I'm really bad at adventure)

And I doubt goblins will be a problem, I built a fortress right next to their capital, then went through the whole place with an adventurer until I fell into the underworld. I thought the spire was the same as a vault...
But I could still restart the fortress from where I left off. So it should be fine.

At level 89 of all combat skills? With 20 being legendary+5?

And anyways, I'm just harvesting metal. All the angels should have some...

He's grand master in everything, and decked out in divine metal, and as large as a forgotten beast. You'll be cloven in half.

And they respawn a bit if you rest or revisit.  don't know if they respawn infinitely,  but they do some.

I use legends viewer to locate the vaults, much easier than working from coordinates.

How do you cheat up to 89?  Is it a dfhack feature?

I think there are a set number, so they would just move around, not respawn.

And the 89 stuff, it's a glitch. If you throw yourself a certain distance onto an upright spear trap it makes you legendary+74 in all combat skills. But it only works on melee weapons. Crossbows give you hammer, and bows give you sword.
Here it is, it's fairly interesting.

You are using training wooden spears right?
Yep. Died twice though...
First one pierced my heart, second one destroyed my skull. Of course, I was using 10 wooden spears...
But I have since gotten a rectangular faceted metal shield and a faceted metal spear killing a Dreaming Spirit Spearman.

I met the vault guard. Attacks 10 times, I block all of them.

"is of a part with" is not proper grammar. It should be fixed...

Edit: The axemen hold two shields, not caps...
