((Just what the actual hell is a trap?))

-snip-
The problem is that right now we can't fight the Baron's forces without the support of our troops. If they view us as weak they might defect which would be a LOT worse than some serfs running off to join them. We can always relax security in the village once this emergency has passed but we really need to focus on the short term for now.

((Trap characters are...hard to distinguish as male or female and in anime it can be seen for comedic purposes. Not to be confused with transvestite characters.))

Also +1 to looking strong. Especially since this is the most critical hour in our life...An everyone else's too.

But at the same time, having our one big food source unhappy and ready to defect the moment we let our guard down? That is one big problem because if they do defect, we would have to waste valuable resources reinstating an area or finding stragglers, while having vampires defect would be bad, not as bad as what could be compared as every supermarket in your town having got up and left.
And all the plants that bared fruit wilted.

Chance it then I say.

If we lose here militarily the peasants are no more. An it's game over or we join up with this Wilhelm guy.

If we accept the monasteries help, we can get them to pipe down and make sure they don't go anywhere while we march against Wilhelm...with dissatisfied soldiers. Hopefully we don't get assassinated by our own dudes.

If we chance it with our steward then we lose nothing in either field or economically. Or a large proportion of our people run away.

Idea: Can we negotiate a surrender with Wilhelm, accepting him as our master? Or is that out of the realms of possibility?

Edit: I'd like to change my vote to having the steward run things while we raise our army. It'll give us a good head start and when we return we'll have proven our self a protector. If they rebel...we'll put them in line. If they leave, we'll find more.

Actually, lower level vampires just get by on chicken and... what was it? Cow? Goat? One of those. Anyway they get by on their blood. Humans give an offering of blood to the higher level vampires and besides that just basically feed themselves with crops and raise animals for blood. It would probably be rather shameful but we could survive on that stuff ourselves if we really had to.

Right, so what are the villagers used for, apart from occasional sacrifices?

Found the quote.
The one in the middle is Jorin, his steward, who takes care of his lands and makes sure all taxes are paid and an offering of human blood is given to the higher ranking vampires. The lower ranking ones are content to feed on chicken and goat blood; human blood is only given to them when they win battles, allowing them to feast on hapless villagers caught in their wake.

They till the fields to feed themselves and raise chickens and goats. They give the animal blood to the minions and they give some of their own blood to the higher-ups. Humans breed better than vampires. You get 2 humans and you end up with 3 humans. That's a +1 to the amount of animate beings. A vampire and a human and you end up with 2 vampires - zero sum.

EDIT: Also, I don't think the peasants are sacrificed to us. They probably just put a bunch of blood in a bottle or something. A lot more efficient to have a tenth of the blood from 10 peasants each than all the blood from 1 peasant. They get back that extra tenth by the next day but it takes YEARS to get another peasant with the same amount of blood as everyone else if we decide to drink everything and kill one.

It takes you quite a while to make a decision. Your mind is still groggy, and thoughts of traps and heathen God's and hissing still plague your mind. Why do vampires hiss you ask yourself? The thought lingers in your mind, until the stars of your counselors bring you back into focus. Or as much focus as you can muster.

"Why do we hiss?"

"What?" the three ask simultaneously.

"Why, whenever something bad happens we bare our fangs and hiss?"

The three give each other stares. "My master, are you alright?"

You shake your head. "Yes, yes. I'm fine." You think the situation through once more. "I'll leave it to you, Jorin. Malachi, stay here. I will raise my army."

"Of course, master." Jorin leaves the room.

"Father Joseph, I appreciate your offer, but I don't need your help right now. I need soldiers."

He gives a sigh, then smiles warmly. "You'll be wanting help soon enough, and I'll always be there to give it to you, my girl."

Finally you are alone with Malachi. "My master, Wilhelm' force grows stronger every passing moment. It is good that you decide to start now. His forces consist of heavily armored, well-armed elites surrounded by waves of ghouls and slaves as shields. How shall our forces be arranged to combat them, master?"

You:

...form a band of equal size. It will be easier to gather and maintain a horde of weaker ghouls, but it will be a battle of attrition. The chances of success will be higher as your army can move in daylight but the war will drag on for a long time.

...form an elite group. A smaller, better armed and better trained group of veterans. They will cost more, and the chances are lower since even they can't take down an entire army by themselves. The best course would be to use their small size to infiltrate and assassinate Wilhelm and his lackeys.

...ask other lords for help. The other lords will gladly fight the warlord, but they are wary of you. They have not known you as long as they've known Count Olaf. Their armies are already armed and ready to fight. However, asking for their help will leave you and your lands at the mercy of their future favors. You won't lose much in terms of men or money in the short term, but it will be harder in the future.

Band of the same size. Whenever we are going to fight them in the day light we'll tear down housing and trap them piece by piece. Not to mention fighting at night. We should also try to take out a good chunk in a surprise attack from behind or something.

Band of equal size
What we need right now, is time. Time to organize our defences, time to let the serfs adapt to their new lord, time to gather our strength. Besides, time should also play against Wilhelm, as I daresay that the other lords will take his murder of Olaf as a reason to legimately slaughter the shit out of him and his troops, grab a few of his villages, the works.

There might even be those which would do the same to us, but if that comes to pass, we can always seek an ally - and in that case, our already few elite troops would be even more scattered about and useless.

Else, what 3man75 said is also worth a shot.

Yhea, that's for sure, at this point gaining a foothold is our main priority, we start with ghouls and we build off there.
Band of equal size.
