Tree Diplomacy
« on: September 29, 2014, 12:18:15 pm »

Two questions about tree diplomacy:

1. What is considered a "fell" in DF2014 -- a tree or a log? Back when each tree gave a single log it didn't matter, but now it makes a huge difference.

2. I know that you can't offer underground fungus-wood in trade to the elves, but do they count underground fungal trees among the "fells"?

In my current fortress, I'm highly amused by the Elvish diplomat's joy at seeing we haven't chopped a single tree when he can clearly see that the entire embark is a desert, that doesn't HAVE a single tree to cut.

I'm even more amused that he wants us to limit ourselves to cutting no more than 114 of our zero, non-existent trees.

But I need to know if he's going to become a pain once we have an underground tree farm set up.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

You can mod it in cant you? Tbh Ive always ignored the elven diplomats since the elves equip their military with wood and except for the extremely rare pet they are mostly useless if you can fell trees to begin with. Just take care of the bowmen and the occational mounted unicorn and you will be fine.

What do you mean, how? As soon as you get a mayor, elven diplomats start visiting.

I started getting elven diplomats (unmodded) a couple of releases ago. I think Toady said he fixed the bug that prevented them from showing up.

I assumed felling X trees meant felling X trees, regardless of how many logs they produced. I also assumed that underground trees count, although I don't have any experience to offer because I generally leave the caverns alone. I can tell you from experience that underground trees don't grow very quickly, so you'll be hard pressed to actually hit the limit.

Per the file changes.txt log, it as re-added in 40.05.

Hm. Never gotten one. Guess the elves don't like me.  :'( I find elves are great for exotic war animals. That's about it. Oh, and live war training once I secure a male and a few females.

Think it requires you to be close to their capital right now.  I've only had 1 game where they showed up, yet several where I was close enough to get traders.

Not really sure if that's intended bahvior or not.

Magma diplomacy is much better. Specially since they use wood in weapons.

I think it's actually baron, not mayor. But yes, I'm playing unmodded :)

Thanks all -- looks like a job for !SCIENCE! -- since there are no above ground trees, it will be clear what the diplomat is complaining about.

And if he complains -- yes, there is always Magma Diplomacy.

(But the way things are going, by the time I have a substantial underground tree farm, both of our civilizations will have been wiped out by off-screen goblin attacks, so I might not see him again. I currently have two Baronesses and a Count, due to various of my craftsdwarves suddenly inheriting titles.)

I had this too in my recent fort, the elves showed up and demanded that I "fell" no more then 100 trees per year.

Great that they're showing up - but a limit of 100 trees?  That's a bit silly with the multi-tile trees now where cutting down 10-20 trees supplies me with enough wood for a year.

Toady is going to have to rebalance that so that the base limitation is 10 or 15 trees.
