Medicine for babies
« on: September 29, 2014, 04:07:17 am »

So I just had a goblin pikeman ambush, they found one of my well armoured mums - so they stabbed the baby.  Twice.  She then shot the attacker in the lung, and the rest of the fortress shot everything within 30 urists of the event, while my war cheeta zipped in and ate goblin heads whole.

Needless to say - the only injury is the baby.  So my question - will kiddy ever get to the hospital, or will mum carry it around until it dies from infection or grows up to be a maimed cripple?

Not sure, but the baby will be probably carried around with a broken lung until childhood, and then it will go to hospital.

Babies are treated more or less like an insane unit - they never take a job, and "Rest" (the requisite for treatment) is a job. Once they reach childhood, wounded infants normally go to rest - directly walk to the hospital or flop down where they lie/stand and wait to be recovered. As long as infancy lasts, however, they won't react to their wounds and you can only hope that infection doesn't kill them before treatment.

That's all experience from .34.11, but if your wounded baby hasn't been treated yet, that's probably still how it (clunkily) works in DF 2014. Having health problems should definitely trigger a "rest" and treatment request once the child can act on its own, it shouldn't grow up untreated.

Toady should introduce contagious infections...

Urist McBabyTyphoidMary

Incurable until they grow up, meanwhile the rest of your dwarves are all coming down with infections.

Nah, a wounded infant should trigger a diagnosis request for it (with the mother carrying it) to the hospital.

But infants are like parasites to the mother instead.

Aren't they in real life as well?

The baby likely wont ever go to the hospital for its existing conditions*, even when it grows*.  You can definitely see dwarves neglecting treatment in favor of work.  Say if the hospital is unavailable or the beds were removed from under it or if they were stationed too long or w.e.  The lung shouldn't be too big of a deal.  If you are worried arrange a non-fatal accident to send to back too the hospital . . . another broken organ should do it.  A nice 2-3 zlevel fall or a stray bolt.

Sweet jesus... Babies are latched onto their mothers' breasts. This way, mothers have free hands and can use babies as shields :o
