The thick boughs and vines of the forest blocked out even the moon's light, leaving only the fire to see by. It was impossible to make out the surrounding area past the rutted road; only glimpses of the firebugs' dances in the forest showed a world outside of the fire's flickering light.

They did a once-over of their belongings again while their morning meal simmered. Years of travelling light had made a lasting habit, leaving their knapsack bare of all but the essentials.
