And how do you find it affects your fps?

Without temperature fire and mamga don't work, so I always turn it on.

How badly do you get punished fps-wise for it?

Pretty heavily. If you're having FPS issues, I would turn it off and live without magma (if that's boring, try building an above-ground fort! They're surprisingly fun.)

In some climates, I go from 100 to 50 FPS after the first spring melt. Idk why. (This was in 0.34.11.)

I've never shut it off, and I observe no appreciable impact from it, even over many in-game years.

IIRC fire still burns items, but it doesn't injure dwarves.  May be wrong though.  I keep temperature on.

I think that what he means is that fires don't start without temperature unless they're started by a fire-spewing beast.

What's the fps now? I'm ok with 30(which is still too fast to follow some combats).

If the fps is lower than 30, there should be other serious problems.

I play with temperature on, on a five year old fort which runs on 23 fps I noticed no difference in fps.
Maybe one or two more fps but not too sure so I just leave it on.

Pretty much the same here.
Playing with temperatures off can be pretty game breaking if you want to play with certian trap systems or against certain enemies etc pp.

I turn it on once I dig to magma or something catches fire to speed the boring part of the first years as much as possible.

How are people having such wildly different fps changes with temperature? Some people report no noticeable difference, others report up to a 50 percent increase or decreases in fps when temperature is on/off respectively.

I don't get it.

Depends on the embark.  Some are more temperature calculation intensive than others.  Breaching a volcano 100Z high above the surface to allow it to flood the embark level on a 400Z+ embark will certainly lower your FPS.

However, exposing the magma sea on a 20Z shallow embark?  You likely wouldn't even notice.

world size, world age, number of civs, history settings, embark size, world thickness, trees or not, shrubs or not, number of caverns, surface biome type, evilness, savagery, number of animals, fort size, fort design, number of cavern monsters, number of flying creatures on the map at the moment, blood rain, change of seasons, freezing/thawing, all of these can have a massive effect on the performance of DF.

Does turning off temperature affect magma forging?

Like 200 dwarves, 4*4 embark with a large world? Yeah, that'll bring it down to single digits :p

I don't get it.

The game is CPU based.  If people have computers that are slower than others then it affects them more.
