Welcome to theology. One man's sacred truth is the next's heresy. This is why it is fortunate to learn about it as a nonbeliever, because at the end of the day you can just call it all a wash anyway.

Not exactly on topic, as I haven't been following the thread that carefully, but I'm kind of surprised that we can handle a thread about Christianity reasonably and without getting it locked but every other controversial topic has been hammered (see: The THREE different threads regarding whatever that Zoe person did, the abrahamic religions thread, the gender roles thread, etc.)

a thread about Christianity
Heh, that's the trick: This isn't a thread about Christianity - that would result in flames hot enough to burn heretics - but about questions within Christianity, which are usually too specific to invite trolling.

The Abrahamic religions thread went a bit haywire with one guy going overboard with Muslim-hate. I wouldn't say it was in-and-of-itself particularly volatile.
The other threads, though... anything about women (or sex/gender in general, really) makes the whole Internet explode with raeg. I actually find it kinda funny to see just how angry people get over the subject. The fallout? Not so much. Still, it's not surprising, given the current... climate... around the topic.

This thread seems to be compromised mostly with people who are open to discussion. For the moment, at least. There were instances with people going all "hurr durr yer beliefs are dumb" further back.

...

Either way, it's a Bay12 politics thread. It's only a matter of time.

We should have a "religion and politics" section of General Discussion, given the large number of threads about them.

How about no...

We don't need to add extra validity to these.

And have every thread in that section locked in short order, like they usually are?

Yeah. There's a lot of these kinda threads, but we certainly don't want to encourage them.

Everything past the beginning of Revelation gets confusing from a theological standpoint, which ironically is why so many groups stick a position and defend it with absolute zeal.  If we're doing Left Behind-style tribulation, people do get the opportunity of a life to repent so long as they don't accept the Mark of the Beast. Granted, it also says this will get you killed, but one could make the argument that this only expedites a believer's exit from the destruction of Old Earth.

What is the Mark of the Beast, though?

In any context where you die and go straight to your final destination, the concept of a Judgement Day can only refer to judging those that were still alive when the Last Trumpet sounded.

Not necessarily - my church believes that you go to a "got everything done I needed to"/"didn't get everything done" waiting place after you die, and then you go to one a of a few different places at Judgement depending on how you actually lived your life.

There's several viewpoints on the matter. I personally buy into the idea that it's either a reference to Roman coinage or that it doesn't mean anything, and that the whole of Revelation is just the mad rambling of an exiled fanatic.

Why don't you guys want to more politics threads? They're the main reason I'm here.

Also, lots of them tends to end up locked, but we have a tendency to lock in a prophylactic way not to disturb the Toad too.

The only omniscient thing I know that cares for all equally and is arguably all powerful is the internet.

Ergo, internet is God. I've cracked the mystery! :P

Seriously, though,

Welcome to theology. One man's sacred truth is the next's heresy.

Yea, pretty much. IMO, religion serves as a meaning-giver to the lives of the believers. Each person within the religion tailors it to suit themselves, though usually based on one general source. The fact it's so subjective, when by nature it should be absolute, would make me rather worried were I a believer.

As for the mark of the beast, I suppose it's possible that it means a consumeristic world focused completely on money is a sign the End Times are coming.

In other words, it's been about to happen since the first coin was minted, or thereabouts :P

Pretty much this. Bay12 is one of my main sources of news and information, and it's often faster than online newspapers and such!

I'm not against additional politics threads (I opened one myself last night), but unless there's someone that Toady can trust with moderation powers (kind of like Mephansteras for mafia subforum) I don't see much of a point in a specific subsection of the GD subforum devoted to them.  Plus, they are probably the single biggest contributor to Toady wielding his banhammer.
