Don't forget that the most important commandment (well, one of the most important; the other being "love God"), according to Jesus himself, is "love your neighbour". It's not our job to carry the sword.

Though by my understanding the bible is ok with you carrying a sword for your country in war as long as your country follows the commandments

... more specifically, "thou shalt not kill" is... well, wrong. "Thou shalt not murder" is closer, but still not quite what the original said. The wikipedia page is pretty thorough about it. Insofar as I can tell, the bible doesn't give an exception for soldiers insofar as it just says jack-all about them being OK to kill and whatnot, at least as the OT goes. Doesn't give any particular condemnations about it, though.

Yeah, the way I've always heard it interpreted is that "Thou shalt not kill" is more about not committing cold blooded murder a la the Cain and Abel story.

Open warfare is a thing that's quite present in the Old Testament. If God was against warfare when He was making the Commandments, He probably could've clarified at any point during the Old Testament while there's war going on.
