And blast! You almost traded! Granted, it was with elves and you have very few trade goods, but still. Also, if you ever reclaim the surface, you'll have VAST quantities of weaponry and armour from the caravans.

I've seen undead do the same thing.  I'm not really sure what causes it, but I think it has something to do with the undead pathing bug that was fixed.  Likely there is still some remant behavior that didn't get totally quashed.

I hope your caverns don't get overrun with zombies also. But it would be interesting to see how the forgotten beast fares against the undead.
