If you're willing to edit the raws you can butcher goblins (and any other sapient
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
creatures) it can and has been done.

Just change
Code: [Select]
[ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER:UNTHINKABLE]
[ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_KILL:UNTHINKABLE]
[ETHIC:MAKE_TROPHY_SAPIENT:SHUN]

to
Code: [Select]
[ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER:ACCEPTABLE]
[ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_KILL:ACCEPTABLE]
[ETHIC:MAKE_TROPHY_SAPIENT:ACCEPTABLE]

This has the side effect of you being able to also butcher humans, elves, and any other sapient (humanoid) creatures.
I feel like I now want elves to be the main food source
and now the great question ¨The critical question is this: do elf bones yield more crossbow bolts than the average number of bolts necessary to kill an elf?¨

Sounds like a perfect time for... SCIENCE!!

Does this work now?  I could be crazy, but I thought in previous versions you still couldn't butcher sapients even if the raws were modded as described.  I thought it used to be hard coded as impossible, even if ethics were changed such that it should be possible.

But you definitely CAN butcher them now in adventure mode (which was previously impossible unless you were starving), so maybe this has changed?  Have you actually succeeded in butchering humanoids in fortress mode?

For OP - if you set up a fishing industry and you have a river, I don't think you should have much trouble getting enough food.  But maybe you don't want to include fishing as "hunter/gatherer"?

If you want to make it easier, you could start in summer or autumn, so that there are more plants to gather.  With the new plants there are VERY large amounts of food that can be gathered in most biomes, but only once the fruits appear in summer/autumn (gathering before then just removes the plant).

If you aren't finding enough animals on the surface, you could go hunting down in the caverns.  You probably would want to have your military kill the things you find down there and then butcher them afterwards, rather than just assigning dwarves to hunt, as a lone hunter may not be able to handle many things in the caverns.

Fishing is ok
I just want to sway away from traditional underground farming and ranching tamed animals

the reason for this is that in my world history class the teacher said that civilization would not exist if there was no farming

I want to challenge that through DF

I understand that the 7 dorfs that you start with probably came from civilization that farmed but I am looking to see if civilization can be created without farming, so the end goal of this fort is to at least get it to where it becomes a mountain home if not at least to the point where there is a mayor and to see if a large population can be suported without farming or ranching domesticated animals

If you're not doing any farming at all, you may as well set all plant seeds to be cooked as well, since you won't be planting them...

Be sure to post the results here after you've been playing the place for a year or so to tell us what's going on, I'm quite curious at this point

I know in previous versions the animal and fish populations could be eliminated and would never repopulate or newly migrate into your area.  Have these issues been addressed?  I think I remember seeing updates about this but does anyone know for sure?

I'm not sure if it's a fair simulation, since dwarves eat only something like 4 times per year.  If humans only needed to eat that much we'd have no trouble just gathering berries and such.  Anyhow, assuming you settle somewhere with a reasonably high amount of native plants I don't think you should have any trouble gathering enough to eat.

I don't know anything about whether the fish and animal populations have been fixed, but I think you should be able to get enough food with just plant gathering, provided you are careful and gather a large portion of what is available in the autumn.

While dwarves only eat 4 times a year, real humans have miles of gathering grounds. I think it kind of levels out a little bit
