How do you deal with fire?
« on: September 02, 2014, 11:14:58 am »

So I went to slay a dragon and the little coward ran away from me. Which surprised me, but I guess my adventurer was just that terrifying.

Anyway, I chased him out of his lair - which in retrospect was a terrible idea, as he breathed fire all over the grass, and I couldn't block that. I got to the nearby brook, only to find that it had frozen over, and my burning flesh wasn't melting it. Though in retrospect, since it was a brook I wouldn't have been able to jump in anyway.

I tried pouring water out of my waterskins, but that didn't help.

The odd thing was, it was raining the whole time, and while I burned to death I remained coated in water. In fortress mode, a coating of water would have prevented me from catching on fire in the first place.

Is fire just hilariously overpowered in adventure mode?

Fire is pretty dangerous.  The best defense is prevention - a shield can block fire, and covering yourself in water before fighting fire-breathing monsters can help you avoid igniting in the first place.

Sometimes your clothes will catch fire before your body (generally if you're wearing a cloak), in which case you can survive by throwing the burning garments away if you're quick.

Otherwise, unless there's a river nearby, you're pretty much screwed.  Too bad you can't roll on the ground or to put out the flames...

Are you sure you caught fire *from* the burning grass?  In experiments I have done (I was definitely *NOT* trying to burn down a forest retreat :P), it takes many hours for fire to spread even one tile in adventure mode, and you of course can't move onto a tile which is already burning.

Did you maybe dodge onto a tile that was on fire?  In that case, this could be prevented by setting your combat prefs ("c") to "stand ground", to prevent automatic dodging (you can still dodge manually, if say the dragon is charging you).  Unless things have changed, completely unskilled shield users block dragonfire pretty much all the time, so you shouldn't get burned if you have a shield.

The dragon probably ignited the tile he was standing on with its breath attack cone. (You can also alt-move through fire.)

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

I was blocking a lot of fire, and the dragon was running away from me, just breathing fire when he turned around to go back to his lair - never landed a melee attack.

Is that possible?  I didn't think that could happen if you blocked the fire.  I think !!SCIENCE!! is required...
