Well... How eventful. I like how everyone pretty much gets the check.

And the only one with a Swim check is going to ignore it and keep "sleeping."

I don't know.  Rikimaru requiring 3 consecutive 17+'s to rescue the kid, which would arguably be beyond his ability (assuming the kid put Rikimaru into medium load (which is 21lbs) Rikimaru would have to roll 23 to actually do so.  (Armor Check penalties are doubled for the Swim skill, and Medium load is a -3 Armor Check penalty.))

I don't think Riki actually had to make a swim check, though.

Anyway, readied maneuvers:
Warblade:
Flashing Sun
Wolf Fang Strike
Mighty Throw

Swordsage:
Shadow Blade Technique
Sudden Leap
Douse the Flames
Emerald Razor

If he didn't, then we should never have bothered with the raft as it moves slower than our walking speed.

We can't walk during the night.
At least, most of us.

The river is moving at 4 1/2 miles an hour. That's faster than your walking speed and constant. If it's poled that's faster. When Ganron hits t he water he starts drifting at 4 1/2 miles. Thus he was keeping abreast with the cart so long as it wasn't poled. I figured that you guys would stop poling it along once you knew he was in the water. Thus, he was right next to the raft.

So Riki, having jumped in, must make 2 consecutive DC 15 Swim checks (at a -2 penalty) for him to reach Ganron and get back without him.  In order to rescue Ganron, he'd have to make another DC 15 Swim check at a -8 penalty.  In other words, literally impossible.

Ganron would have to be swimming towards the Raft, making those same Swim checks every round in order to stay abreast of the raft.  Failure on /any/ of them means we pull away from him.  If he fails a check by 5 or more, not only has not maintained distance to us, but he goes under and the next round he automatically loses distance.  If he's panicking, then that means he's bad at swimming.  If he's not panicking, he's the second best swimmer in our group and anyone other than me jumping in to save him is literally meaningless.

Let's say the river is moving 1.

Ganron is in the river thus Ganron is moving 1.

The raft is in the river thus Ganron is moving 1.

Both start at the same time
  • and so as long as No one is propelling the raft he will stay abreast of the boat.

I don't see where you think Ganron started moving away from the boat. You guys are travelling with the river.

Teal's saying that rafts are easier for water to push than people, and hence Ganron would have to swim to make up for the difference between the raft's more buoyant speed and his own, I believe.

Oh, well... He's alive and well. It was a heavy raft I guess.

Indeed. For reference, this is why boats become slower as they fill with water. Besides being heavier and therefore having more inertia, they sit lower in the water and have a less hydro(?)dynamic profile.

I don't see where you think Ganron started moving away from the boat. You guys are travelling with the river.

Rafts, being a vessel designed for water travel, have a speed of a half mile (on top of the river speed), which equates to 5 feet per round.  Ganron, being not a vessel designed for water travel (and if he is we shouldn't even think about helping him as he's much more capable than we are), must make full round actions to travel 10 feet per round, at DC 15 (with any penalties for whatever's in the water.)  Regardless of Ganron's distance, Riki jumped into the water.  This means he must also make those DC 15 Swim checks, which regardless of what he wants to think, he'll never actually help Ganron because he can't.
