Why would you dl it from somewhere other than the official OpenTTD site?  You're trying to run the original game that hasn't been worked on to run on modern machines.

Didn't realize there was an actual website! Thank you, I'll try that.

Yeah, there's a limit for each transport type.

The default road vehicles limit is 500 per company. If you need more than that, what the hell are you doing? (Alternate response: Wait for better buses/trams, or use other types of vehicle since you clearly need higher cargo capacity)

I am connecting every each little house of every each city in our little Caribbean Island nation.

Next map I demand an increase to the road vehicle limit. The buses must flow.

Well seeing as how this thread is currently active and the general thread is 2 years since the last post, I'm going to ask for help here and avoid adding to the mound of dead TTD threads.

I am having some trouble running this game. I downloaded from abandonia, and at first I had an error saying that dplay.dll was missing, so I copied dplayx.dll and renamed it, that worked but then the game crashed very quickly. while in windowed mode it would give me the message "TTDLOADW.OVL has stopped working". I've tried deleting the file to let it create a new one, but to no avail. I tried installing the TTDpatch but it too crashes.

I'm on windows 7, I have a feeling that is a big part of it.
If you downloaded it from adbondania, it's probably the original TTD, not OpenTTD. The all-caps filenames reinforce this belief, since that's a typical DOS-era thing.

Well it works and I am now making trains everywhere :)

I have some questions though. First off, how do I get and play scenarios? I would like a bit of a goal to play single player.

Secondly, I am trying to transport steel to a factory. I have a train going from the steel mill to the factory, however nothing is being transported. I am watching the steel mill and it seems that iron ore is being delivered, and steel is being produced (about 150), but then it disappears before the train picks it up. No idea where it's going, all that is around the mill is the train station.

Did you refit the train correctly?

Anyway, if you download version 1.4.2 of the real OpenTTD, you can join us on the server and we'll help you learn.

Obviously it doesn't work, at least not how you want it to. Now go download the legally free OpenTTD and we can help you get up and running.

Yep I have Open TTD, but is it ok to join a server? The worlds seem a bit small and mostly for competitive multiplayer.

We're using a 1024x1024 map, not the default size. There is space. :)

Cargo holding vehicles have to be refitted to other cargo types. Usually they default 'passenger' or 'goods'. 'Steel' is not 'goods'. Steel is steel. You should probably use the wiki on this. https://wiki.openttd.org/Refit  Just know that you will have to attach cars to train engines to refit them. If you want a train to carry multiple cargo types that use the same car then you will have to pull them on and off the engine to refit.

If you want single player scenarios look up "nocargoal" or "silicon valley" and use the 'game scripts' option in the intro screen. Some decent AI's for single player are nocab, trains, trans, admiralai, and cluelessplus.

Dive into the options menu. There is much work to do to get things how you want them. Just know that any grf changes will not apply to any save games. You're locked in once you start a game. This goes for AI's and game scripts as well as vehicles.

I am only concerned about the transport of the steel. I have steel holding cars but as my train is traveling along the tracks, the steel in the mill is disappearing. It seems that the things produced at steel mills just up and vanishes after a while. Which is a bit annoying. Guess I will have to use 2 trains if the tracks are too long.

That sounds odd indeed. Things tend to build up as you transport things (its why the second trip is usually faster than the first trip, since now the place is producing goods), not vanish.
