This seems like a historically accurate way to celebrate what is still Federally Columbus Day.

Settlers jumping off the Mayflower wearing riot gear and firing tear gas grenades is actually a pretty potent image

[OT: wow, down on page three]

A Kentucky State Police training slideshow (from 2013ish) has come to light.  Complete with quotes from Adolf Hitler and doozies like "meet violence with greater violence" and advocating for troopers to be "ruthless killers".  Probably best to look for yourselves since I'm not providing context.

https://manualredeye.com/90096/news/local/police-training-hitler-presentation/

Nothing particularly new, perhaps, but thought some here might be interested.

It’s hard to even comment on, it’s just so damn scary, and partially because it isn’t even the most surprising thing (still a shock though, as coming to terms with how bad things are isn’t easy).

A good one to read is Why They Kill, which is an overview of Lonnie Athens's work, who spent like 30 years going to prisons, building rapport, and asking murderers, armed robbers, etc. to describe their lives and thought process leading up to their crimes.  It has a lot of interesting points and ideas in general, a general program with milestones and key decision points that virtually every violent criminal passes through, and most ballsy an assertion that every violent criminal is a rational actor and criminal mental illness is just rational behavior from a perspective alien to the psychologist evaluating them.  That basically every dude he talked to, even the ones who "blacked out" or did it for "no reason" or otherwise seem like a homicidal maniac, could articulate a completely rational (to them) thought process that led to their decision to do it.

And of course, if you compare it to the cops, you find police culture and training is an accelerated course for running people through the milestones that lead to violent criminality.

I'm stuck on that "Wolves travel in packs, Eagles soar alone" caption. So many different directions to take that.

The other odd part is that a fair bit (not all) of the first half is espousing fine ideas for a police training (e.g. "the bottom line in ethics is to never knowingly do harm") then it gets to rather different bits like "A wicked man only knows evil. So a cruel messenger must be sent to him" and... well, the slide after that is pretty astounding even without the Hitler quote, the next Hitler quote, and the slide simply bearing "Uber alles."

On a side note, a little surprised the Philly 'abandoned child' story didn't make the rounds here.

I liked the part where they quote Spider-Man

For a bit more depth, the Philly police Fraternal Order of Police, the biggest police union in the US, tweeted (I think) a picture of an officer with a black toddler saying the only concern they had was to get the toddler out of the lawless chaotic protest.

A lawyer for the family of the toddler said the toddler was in a car with a woman who got caught between the protest and the police, the police smashed the car up, beat the woman, took the kid, and won’t tell the family where the car is, which had the kids’ hearing aids in it.

wait

the police attacked innocent black citizens, then framed themselves as the good guy and the black citizens as bad?

there's no way they would do that...

Worth noting that it's unclear whether the FOP was making the post in conjunction with the Philly police - that is they can at least claim deniability that FOP knew the circumstances by which the police got ahold of the toddler.

(Of course, they're still lying in the case -- just BS instead of seizing somebody's kid for a photo-op. Not much better.)
