Definitely DF Mode for me.  I don't really see the point of adventure mode, there are a million other roguelikes out there that probably do a better job of that sort of thing.

DF has a persistent world, a mostly believable combat system and more or less infinite potential going for it though, it hasn't really been a roguelike for a long time.

Anyway, I play both modes more or less equally.

DF2012 - mostly adventure mode.

DF2014 - mostly fortress mode

That seems sort of backwards considering this last update..

It's actually making sense because on the paper DF2014 Adventure mode recieved tons of new features that will make it more fun than DF2012 adventure mode
But in the same time DF2014 has new bugs that unfortunately makes the whole experience much less fun than DF2012 .

I'm sure once those bugs are fixed, DF2014 adventure mode will finally shine more than DF2012 as it should be.

Fortress Mode, definitely.

I really enjoyed it since DF2012 because it has a great replayability factor, as each game is unique, and it gives incredible amount of freedom. Sandbox at its finest. The number of strategies you can develop is nearly infinite. Even some minor strategy alterations, like changing the items taken on embark, can make a great difference in a long run.

When DF2014 came out, introducing some nasty bugs in fortress mode, I've decided to try adventure mode, for the first time. My initial enthusiasm soon wore off. I didn't like it. Perhaps some of you might not agree with me, but the world in adventure mode seems so artificial. Hearing "It is terrifying" all the time makes me feel that I play with some retarded robots. All quest are generic and uninteresting. While combat system is indeed nice, it's not enough to make it entertaining for me.

Yeah, as I said in another thread, adventure mode is kind of a mess of half-finished features at the moment. You have to make your own fun, like say exploring your old forts, finding and taking on goblin armies, wiping out the elves, etc. Everyone being a retarded robot is a big problem though... supposedly people have personalities and dreams like they do in fortress mode, but there's no real way to explore or interact with them yet, which is sad but not unexpected.

Adventure mode for me, no matter how hard many tutorials I read and watch I just can't learn how to play fortress mode beyond the first few steps, and I like being able to influence the world beyond wars and migrants.

Adv. mode gets better with every new release, but it's still a tad boring. Fortress mode is far more interesting right now and it's where I spend most of my time.

I go for both. Adventurer mode primarily to get started in DF. All my forts up until now have been duds, but I have a fort that's been going for two-three years now and is a village. Not optimized at all, but I'm happy with it.

To see the potential of playing both, just imagine when relations/emotions/fame/etc.. will be all fixed and working.

You play the fortress mode for a few years, have setup your fort, its defenses and trained your dwarven military.
Then you retire the fort and let it continue on its own.

You create then an adventurer, for months you do all sorts of bad deeds increasing your fame in a negative way, and finally after your character is very famous and very strong, you'll get many evil creatures like goblins, bandits and etc.. accepting to be recruited by you by fear or because you're their ideal evil leader.

Leading your bandit army, you walk for that dwarf fortress that is nearby... the fortress you built previously.
Just imagine the fun of your bandit army and the dwarven military you carefully trained and equipped previously clashing in the middle of your defenses, traps and etc.

Currently it's not possible to do that because of the bugs, none really react to anything, or everyone is running away from everything, whatever your fame only a few guys will accept to follow, evil creatures or bandits are greeting and even being friendly to non evil creature, people let themselves being killed without trying to defend, etc...
But when it will finally truly work, oh the fun.

Both.

Example:

I played a adventure for some time, he was very strong. I retired him in a village next to an evil region and started a dwarf fortress in that region, a bit to the west.

After two year my military was obliterated by a forgotten beast. I "retired" the fortress, activated my adventurer, went to the fortress where most of the dwarves were still alive, killed the forgotten beasts, retired the adventurer again and reactivated the fortress.
