I like to imagine the dwarven bowyers are slowly peeling each individual wood fiber from the log bits that didn't go into the frame, and then carefully twisting the fibers into "wood thread". They're not all that big, so material tension/minimal dexterity issues are probably avoided altogether. That way, nothing goes to waste and the entire weapon is offensive to elves.

Dwarven crossbows function as small-clip 30mm autocannons.  No, I'm not kidding, I ran the math.

Until .40.05 wood and bone bolts were fired at speeds approaching a high-powered hunting rifle.

And then just use your imagination for a similar mechanism using bolts instead of slingshot balls

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
