The side of someone's hand playfully bonks you on the head. You turn around and are immediately greeted with the sensation of Caroline Hasting's plush, pink lips pressed against yours for a split second.
It's all you can do not to fall off of your stool. Caroline bursts into a fit of hysterical laughter, causing several patrons to turn their heads and stare. Damien, meanwhile, does his best to suppress his chuckling as Caroline brings a hand to her forehead. "I think the lady hath grace in her; she blushes!" She's right; your face is a deep red from the shock of it all. You avert your eyes.
"Admit it, Maddy," Damien says, flashing his pearly whites. "You want her."
"Absolutely not," you scowl; whether or not you meant it is entirely up to you. Either way, despite how you intended for it to come out in a stern tone of voice, your voice cracks, setting off another round of giggling.
Really, you shouldn't have been surprised; Caroline rarely takes a situation seriously, and often sees a situation as another opportunity for a jest - more often than not, at your expense - and it's a rare moment to see her without mirth in her eyes. Damien is almost as bad, but at least you can count on him to be serious when you need him to. Still, try as you might, it's hard to stay angry at your companions of long.
As Damien and Caroline banter, your attention soon returns to the more pressing matter at hand; that's the third time you've spaced out tonight, and for the same reason. You're awfully lucky that he's too drunk to notice you, or you would have attracted some unwanted attention. At this moment, you realize that you won't be able to get a moment's rest; your thoughts will be consumed with fantasies of the orchestration of the man's gruesome death at your hands, day after day, until you can make those fantasies a reality.
