"Pale" Dwarves keep dying: won't go to hospital
« on: August 15, 2014, 10:44:34 pm »

I have 3 dwarves who are "pale" (one is "very pale").  Two of them have "broken ears" and one has a "broken nose" (they got injured training in the danger room).  They will not go to the hospital and they eventually die (of blood loss I guess?).  My hospital works fine and other dwarves have visited it and been treated no problem.  I have a full staff of 6 dedicated medical dwarves (no hauling & no other labors enabled).  Any ideas how I can force these dwarves to seek treatment?

I have tried completely removing them from their squads, turning off all labors & hauling.  Also, they are not in any burrows and can path to the hospital fine (when they were in their squad, i stationed their squad in the hospital and they got there no problem).

Please help!

So far I've tried the following:

-Turn off every single labor of every single dwarf, except for medical labors.
-Put a burrow around the hospital and assign all three of these dwarves + my medical team to the burrow.

Still no luck!?  These guys start at "faint", progress to "Pale" then die...over the course of a month or two while standing around in the hospital with all the medical dwarves....pffffft.

Not sure if this will help, but try giving them more injuries to, erm, "convince" them to go to hospital.

Broken arms/legs are a fairly popular reason to go see the doctor.

have you got a chief medical dwarf assigned?

have you checked their "z"-> health screens to see what it says there?

Yes, I have a chief medical dwarf assigned. And many other dwarves have been treated fine.

Yes, I have checked their health status (thus the 'faint', 'pale' and 'broken ear/nose' statuses I mentioned in my OP.

I'm trying this now...so far one of them has gone to the doctor and had their broken fingers treated,  and their broken ear was diagnosed, but never treated...going to see if htey stop bleeding.

you need to press "z" on the dwarf then press "h" for health, and look at what problems they have and what treatment is needed. then if it says something like "needs splint" but you don't have any splints, you make some splints.

I understand exactly how the health status screen works, however, if the dwarf's injuries have not been diagnosed, no injury details show up on this screen.  For instance, on one of these dwarves, when i press 'z' and then 'h', on the "Status" screen, it says "Faint", however, on "Wounds" screen it says "no evaluated wounds"...

Regardless, my hospital is fully stocked.  gypsum, splints, crutches, thread & soap.

Sounds like a weird syndrome or something to me?? Is there any chance something got on a spear?

Or a new change or bug. Never had anything like those symptoms in real life years of using danger rooms.

If you can rule out syndromes, I'd throw it on the bug tracker along with a save game, and see what people think.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Sounds like infections. Nothing new. The problem is that wounds in ears and nose usually are rated as damaged cartilage, which doesn't heal and can't be treated in healthcare. Untreated wounds eventually get infected, and infections are simulated as continuous blood loss, leading to faint/pale status and potentially/eventually death.

Assigning cloaks in uniforms should reduce the risk of such wounds, since cloaks somewhat protect the face.

Searching this board for "danger room infection" finds twelve threads, most of them describing this exact problem:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?action=search2

PS: and twenty more over in the "fort mode" board. It does seem that the problem's a bit more immediate in the .40 series - according to reports, cartilage wounds now directly bleed and don't stop; no more need to wait for infection to set in, and very little to do to prevent such death short of full-scale raw hacking.

Truly an ugly way to die, a minor wound that simply never heals.

This is likely a known bug, with the 40.x series, that can easilybe fixed.
Cartilage and nail tissues lack healing rates, and I am not sure it has been fixed in 40.08 yet.

What to do:
Save and exit your game.
Go to you dwarf fortress\DATA\SAVE\RAW\OBJECTS folder, and open tissue_template_default.txt with notepad.
Note that I say your SAVE folder, because only that will affect your current save.

Now press Ctrl-F, to search for key words, and search for "cartilage"
Look at the entry for cartilage. It should look like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
If it lacks the line [HEALING_RATE:1000], add this!

Now repeat, for the key word "nail"
Same here, if the nail entry lacks [HEALING_RATE:1000], add this!

That should fix dwarves bleeding out from their ears and nails, and not being diagnosed. If this is not it, I wouldn't know what's happening

YES! thank you, this was it exactly.  As soon as a loaded the game with these healing rate additions, the injured dwarves immediately went to the hospital and had their ears/nose wounds diagnosed, cleaned, sutured & bandaged.  I am confident that this was the issue.

Are healing rate faster if lower, or higher?

Faster than lower. HEALING_RATE:1 means almost instantaneous healing.
