They make too much noise. Killing one to attract a hundred others doesn't help.
Convenience store, mega mart, police station. Focus on valuable things (either in nutrition, combat usability or barter value) that are also light to carry.

You hit the locations one by one all together, happily without event.

Convenience Store
Everyone stuffs a few bags with candy and water, and someone even manages to get a few cartons of cigarettes.

+8 Candy Bars. +5 Water Rations. +47 Cigarettes.

Mega Mart
This place was already mostly looted, so pickings are slim. They get some food, water, and a bat.

+4 Meat Rations. +7 Water Rations. +Baseball Bat.

Police Station
It seems a few officers has already taken most of the good stuff, but still left plenty for you.

+2 Police Pistol Magazines (9/9) +Police Baton. +Gas Mask. +2 Pepper Spray. +1 Radio.

Now that you have some supplies, you head out to find a place to stay the night, and maybe even set up camp. You can stay in the suburbs, go back to the apartments, head into the forest, go to an abandoned farm, or a gas station.

Abandoned farm

Farms will likely have food, tools, weapons, and perhaps some barbed wire or similar items that could be uesd defensively.

You all decide a farm would be pretty good, who wouldn't think a farm was a good idea? You head to the nearest farm on the outskirts of town. Looks like whoever abandoned it took most of the crop when they left, but they left the livestock, a some cattle and some chickens, and feed for them.
+11 Cows. +10 Chickens. +41 Animal Rations.

Everyone stores the supplies in the barn and check the place to see how dependable it is. The house is pretty simple, two doors, one if front one in back, and the whole place had a wooden fence around it. The animals had their own fence a few hundred feet away, and the barn was only a brisk walk away. There are only three bedrooms, but with one room with a double bed, that makes room for four people to sleep comfortably. The kitchen has a wood burning stove, so you won't need gas or power to cook, theres an outhouse so you won't need water to have a working bathroom, and theres candles all over the place so you can probably light the place without power.

You can choose if you want to stay here tomorrow, for right now its time to sleep, choose who can sleep in the beds tonight.

Clearly as leader we should...

Take the Double bed for ourselves

Take one for the team and sleep on the couch or something

Given the opportunity, Arron takes the double bed with his wife, so they'll probably be happy for the rest of the day. It seems a bit excessive to have a patrol on their first day, so everyone just decides to sleep in. After waking up you take stock of all your supplies, and thankfully everything is still there. You feed the animals, and now everyone is eager to get breakfast. Now you should decide how many rations people should get daily. One ration daily, less pressure on your food supply, but some people might be unhappy with their measly portions. 2 rations, a little more strain on your stock, but its enough to fill your people. Three rations, makes everyone really happy, but its a big drain

We need to find a way to make the cows and chickens into jerky.

We only have four rations so far. I think it's 1 a day until we get enough food. I guess we can go without for now.
Butcher the officer's wife.

Also, we should probably check to see if the hens are laying. If so, that's scrambled eggs for breakfast.

But if we eat the animal feed what will the animals eat?
