Reclaiming ruin to retire
« on: August 11, 2014, 08:02:25 am »

New world generated, two or three abandoned fortresses that can be reclaimed.  I just want to reclaim them quickly one by one, then leave them 'alive' to be visited by my adventurer at a later point.

Are there things I should do to make these forts more successful than they were during world gen? Will their trade depot be filled up by the world 'echo-gnomics' in the normal course of play?

For that matter, should I 'abandon' or 'retire'?

Don't bother trying this in 40.0x, all your forts will be conquered by goblins the first year after you retire them. There's no defense against it, attackers always wins during site conquests.

I tend to play the same dwarf civ everytime, and the first news I always get is that my old fort was abandoned just before goblins attacked. After this news, I usually get one-armed or legless migrants from my old fort.

Aw, that sucks. So I'd have to completely destroy all goblin civilisations for it to have a chance? :P

Dwarfkind must put an end to war before war puts an end to dwarfkind. By killing all the goblins.

Would turning invaders off in d_init make a difference?

I've seen a lot of defending victories in legends mode. Are these somehow calculated differently?

Yes.  The regular world gen and the during-a-game calendar advancement are very different.
