Underground? Colony of flightless wasps. If you are lucky enough to get a hivemother, look after her, she is the main supply of hive underlings.
The Hive. A collection of giant flightless wasps. Workers are human sized. Soldiers 1.5 times that. Hivemothers are 4 times as big as a soldier and have iron hard skin.

Weapons:
Unique:
Slingshot: fires either "shot" or "stings" which are hiven substitutes for the bow, blunt arrows and normal arrows.
Compound Bow: Halfway between a greatbow and a composite bow, these require wood, 2 metal, thread, a mechanism and 2 units of leather.
Cage-a-pult: Very endgame material. Single shot ones can be crafted early game. Fires cages but are very expensive to make (IMPORTANT)

I've drawn a blank for melee weapons.

Oh, nearly forgot. Did i mention that the stingers can fire stings? (Not the stings from slingshot)

Armour:
carapaces: are the main form of armour. Come in standard materials

Pets:
Remember the IMPORTANT cageapults? This is important because the hive keep slaves. Simply take a caged prisoner to the slavers podium. Now bring 1 chain, 1 metal and 1 leather to the podium. You now have a (civ name) slave. Slaves are classed as pets and are given menial tasks like (stray elven woodcutter) slaves can be wartrained.

Another pet is the Hornet wasp. Distantly related to the playable hive, these wasps are not nearly as large but they can sting and are wartrainable and are cheap

Thats really all i can think of ATM. Suggestions?
This is in the masterwork discussion because hopefully the civ is going to be in masterwork version somethingorother.

That might be a little bit hard to do.

I don't like carapaces for armor. Wasps already have carapaces like you have skin. But it is conceivable that intelligent wasps would build patchwork armor to wear over their carapaces, similar to the armored pets in the gnome race.

I think you need to narrow down what insects you want to base off of. Wasps? Ants? Bees? They are all different. Wasps are probably the least interesting of the three.

Insect colonies already also have industry just hard-built into the species you picked. Here are some examples:

Wasps - create larva from LIVING prisoners. Cage a prisoner, take them to the "feeding pit" and then attach larva to them. The larva hatch, eat the prisoner, and then grow into juveniles. Could simulate that with a reaction similar to how ghouls are created in the warlock race.

Ants - They live in a myriad of ways. You have foraging ants (like fire ants), leafcutter ants who have huge underground farms, ants which herd aphids, etc. Ants are probably the most open of the species to develop for.

Bees - They farm mostly, gathering plant material. They would be a surface race, most likely.

There are fantasy insect races to draw from instead, such as AD&D "thri-kreen". Those are sort of a hodge-podge of all and none.

You can certainly implant an egg into a living creature and have it hatch, killing the host. Alien style. Also RL wasp style.

Parasitic wasps are the coolest! So you could require prisoners for breeding? That's be really interesting...

'Castes' could simply rely on a queen/worker/soldier/drone model, though whether that transposes itself well onto the game (or doesn't leave a lot of room for creative license), I can't say. A hive mind helps protect against tantruming, but the death of the queen could cause a severe malus: e.g. a mood hit for the entire fort/hive (she's everyone's mom!)

Wasps have six legs, and assuming these would be humanoid-ish (they can stand up on two), that would allow them the use of four limbs to wield shields/weapons, like antmen. If soldiers are 1.5 human-size that would give them an adult size of about 105k, which would easily allow all of them to use several two-handed weapons, plus shield(s). That would need to be balanced out a bit, I think: maybe they have difficulty gaining experience with combat, maybe they receive poor toughness modifiers, etc.

Adds to the hive mind: PROTECT THE QUEEN. might consider deviating from wasps natural lifespan of 1 year.

Wasps are kinda squishy...
did some research on wasps earlier.
I also need to come up with some "waspy" melee weapons

note: as this is my first time modding, i have copied and pasted the antmen to notepad. i gave them a new civ name. at the moment i am editing them to be more waspy. and flightless males. I am going to put the raws up for suggestions later and also for some help

I hate to say this, but are you sure you want to try an entire race as your first mod? About a dozen people started on a new-race-for-masterwork project, and only Smake and IndigoFenix did it. Boltgun already had a well received and set up mod, that he ported into Masterwork.

Its quite a daunting task, and I would hate for you to do a part, get bored/overwhelmed, and all the work was for nothing in the end.

Mind you, i'm only doing the basis for the race, i'll post the raws and then you or the community can add the bits i missed or couldnt understand how to do

....Hermit Mode combined with Parasitic Wasps. Parasite Wasp Queen that can only create new 'Drone' units through injection of eggs into sentient beings. Other Parasite Wasp Queens that enter the map instantly die and leave behind nothing, or 'pheromones' which allow you to sniff out and call to war/trade other races. Self-sufficiency where they can create their own cement for 'hive' building and smaller vermin-based 'Honey Wasps' for farming honey which is used for advanced reactions. I'm not sure if we have plugins that can create colonies though.

Before this mod, I never pitied the bad guys in any of the fantasy novels I'd read. The undead lich king always seemed like such an uber-menace, but now I know his secret pain of having morons for minions, a vampire doctor just waiting for him to go to sleep, and a constant feeling of anger and depression because he's one armor stand short in his bedroom suite.

Keep in mind that im only making a playable civ. maybe a few workshops. the community is doing the rest. let meph combine them if he wants to. that would be awesome though.

honey. maybe it could be a food that gives a +speed syndrome when consumed. would make sense because honey has (i think) all food nutrients.

I think most the underground wasps should be flightless, but there should be multiple "Worker" castes..and one having flight for scouting (Story purposes), communication (story and real-pacification,minimal others), minimal natural distance stinger shooting and accuracy naturally, weak, 5% faster than brethren. Fairly disposable. Could double duty as larvae carriers (emergency and otherwise-story purposes)

Even in solitary hive type this could fit in potentially.

The thing is, making a playable flying civ raises a lot of problems. thats what meph told me. although there could be a reaction in a workshop that consumes honey and gives the wasp that ran the reaction extra speed.

I was thinking, and wouldn't it be possible to make the new wasp's stats dependant on what it was incubating in?

Magical , intelligent, strong, big...
All of this could give the new wasp bonus, or maybe caste.

Note that I have no clue on how the raws can interact with dfhack scripts, but if it can, then it should be feasible.

That would give an incentive not to just capture weak animals as incubators.
