The cryochamber latch unlocks with a slight hiss of coolant leaking through the first opening. As consciousness returns, you flex most of your muscles, and stagger out of the chamber into the freezing room. Immediately, you know something's wrong, given that there's a very large scratch running the length of the ceiling. You can see a glimpse of sky, along with some very large stone cliffs enveloping the ship. Your memory is also rather damaged, as tends to happen with emergency thawings. Giving a cursory glance at the other chambers, it looks like you're the only survivor of the crash. You hear a familiar small whirr as the Bio-Sympathetic Suit starts up. Unusually, an error console comes up on the visor.

Essentially, Runes are similar to spells. They must be prepared before hand at a Rune Etcher. Each Rune can be used only once before it needs to be prepared again, but you can prepare it as many times as you like, so long as the power cost doesn't exceed your maximum. Runes are composed of two primary parts: The template, and the sigils. The template decides the maximum number of sigils you can have, the number of command sigils you need, and the Rune's general function. Each template also has a base power cost.

The sigils go in the slots on the template. These modify what exactly the Rune does. They can have a variety of effects, and not all sigils will work on all templates. Each sigil also has a power cost, and they will likely represent the bulk of the power usage. Note that not all slots on a template have to be be filled. Command sigils decide the function of the Rune. All command sigil slots must be filled on a template; otherwise, it won't work. Command sigils are marked by the fact that all other sigils will have arrows connecting them, rather than simply lines. Note that on templates with multiple command sigils, only sigils directly connected to them will influence them. Additionally, command sigils cannot be placed in normal slots, nor can normal sigils be placed in command sigil slots.

Runes are etched on Slates, which can only contain so much Runic power. The better your slate is, the more powerful and more numerous Runes you can create. Runes can be activated at any time as your turn, assuming there isn't something preventing you from doing so.

You enter the information to the machine. It takes a few seconds for it to finish input, then the console closes, leaving your vision free of obstructions. You're in the Freezer Bay of the ship, which is towards the back. The Armory will be quite a bit farther up, near the bridge, but some pistols, knives, and flares are kept in the Freezer Bay in case of situations like this. The ship isn't terribly large, so getting to the Armory shouldn't pose a problem, but some aggressive native creatures might be between you and your objective. Getting to the Rune Etcher would also be extremely helpful, and it's closer, as well as on the way.
After picking up a pistol, a knife, two spare magazines, and a flare, you proceed through the only door in the Freezer Bay, to the north. It leads into a small corridor, occupied by a...thing. It's covered in blue fur, and seems to be fairly small. It makes some strange shrieking noises at you, and begins to advance. It's bipedal, though fairly unstable; similar to a primate.
