digging out the inside of the world gen fort spiral staircase

has anybody tried digging out the inside of the spiral staircase to the world gen forts yet by which i mean dig out so that the spiral staircase spirals around a large hole in the ground i cant really work out how to explain what i mean better

You should be able to just channel one layer at a time untill you reach your fortress.

Be careful though, i lost my miner because he chanelled and then jumped into part of the cavern
