How do I dispose of bodies?
« on: July 25, 2014, 03:01:07 pm »

I'm still running v34.11, as I'm working on a community fortress, but I can't figure out how to dump dead bodies. I was able to dispose of dwarf and troglodyte corpses just fine in a stockpile labeled "Corpses," but there were still like 340 animal bodies. I tried making a stockpile labeled "Animal," but my dwarves wouldn't dump them. Also, how do I butcher dead animals?

Dwarf corpses go in graveyard stockpiles. Other corpses go in refuse stockpiles. "Animal" stockpiles are actually for cages (either empty cages or ones with critters in them).

Your dwarves will automatically butcher dead animals if A) you have a butcher's workshop, B) you have a dwarf with the butcher labor enabled who isn't too busy with other things, and C) you have auto-butcher enabled in the workshop orders menu (o, then W), which is on by default. Only fresh corpses can be butchered (so very busy butcher dwarves may wait too long), and some creatures can't be butchered (mostly sentient ones like goblins).

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

When I have access to magma I like to use Minecarts to dump stuff into magma, I don't know if it will work for dwarf corpses, but its probably a good way to get yourself some nice ghosts :).

Dwarves HATE the thought of not being memorialized after death, so if dwarf death is even a possibility in your fort, you should have a decent stockpile of empty coffins and/or blank slabs always at the ready, in case of emergencies. You have to build the coffin somewhere before a live dwarf will load a dead dwarf inside, and depending on your settings (which you can change), dwarves may place dead pets in there instead. If a dwarf's corpse is irretrievable (it fell into magma, or something), the only way to commemorate them is by engraving a slab with their name and deeds, and building it somewhere appropriate.

Adding on to what Untelligent said, dwarves will also refuse to butcher (or even go collect) animals whose corpses are {forbidden}. This is another setting in your
  • rders menu, which I always leave on (personal preference).

I like to use coffins to tile hallways on dirt levels to prevent ugly moss and tree sprouting myself.

Sure I could use paved roads, but I get to level up a craftsdwarf and all you need is furniture hauling to tile the floor.

Unless it's changed in the new versions, tame animals can't be butchered. You have to order them to be slaughtered instead. If they are killed in action defending your fort while serving as a goblin distraction they won't be butcherable.

I think they also end up in the graveyard stockpile and are buried in coffins that are pet enabled.

I usually just dump the bodies in a catacomb system below my main living areas/workshops and build the slabs right outside. Could I still be haunted since the bodies are retrievable?

Regular tame animals aren't considered pets, and do not get buried in pet semataries cemeteries.  Only animals with names get that treatment.

An unnamed tame animal corpse is the most useless thing imaginable.  It won't get buried, can't be butchered, and can't even be chopped into pieces so that the limbs can decay into usable bones.  You have to atom-smash it.

Or dump it in a magma chute! Depending on how easy you can get to the red stuff, this can be a much more hands-free, easy option.

An animal that is available as a pet in your z menu will get buried as a pet even if it hadn't been adopted yet. Just FYI...it happened in my current fort (v34).

I generally just drill right on down to the magma sea, and have things chucked into the molten rock at the bottom. Gone, even if magma safe!

Can someone explain (idiot's guide version) on how to do the body dumping?  I have been trying to figure it out for hours.  I have a 1x1 shaft that goes down a few z levels, but setting it up as a Pit does not allow me to select a corpse to thrown down a pit like I can an animal or cage or what have you.  I then tried assigning a dump on top of the hole, but that does not work either as no dump jobs get generated as long as it is over a hole.  The last few fortresses I have created have gone bye bye simple because of dorfs getting horrified at seeing dead bodies in a refuse pile.

Put the dump zone next to the hole.

OK wait..  If I have a "DUMP" zone (a 1x1 tile) adjacent to a 1x1 channeled hole that is channeled down 100 z levels, then any corpse I designate to be dumped will be tossed down the hole and NOT stored on the actual DUMP square?

If so, then this is one of those times I will be happy to have a face palm moment.
