How to deal with enemy corpses? (0.40.2)
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:37:06 pm »

I am having some trouble getting some corpses out of my fort. They sometimes cause my citizens to run in fear if they get too close. My citizens seem to not want to cart them out. I have tried dumping them, setting my citizens to only haul refuse and corpses, yet there they remain. Any suggestions?

You need to desensitize your dwarves, by forcing them to endure seeing corpses every day.

Try having a dwarf a high Discipline skill go grab it. Or someone with the "doesn't care about anything anymore" trait. They should be able to get close without panicking. If you don't have either, I can't help you.

Suggestions for future corpse management:
1 Try and make the areas where corpses usually hapen in a roofed area, rather than an underground one so they don't generate miasma.
2 Rig a bridge in the main corpse-generating locations to drop them down.

1: Meeting Hall
2: Lock doors
3: Proceed to toss cats
4: Hardened, you're welcome.

corpses can make dwarves terrified now?

okay. the proper solution is to set up a kill room within visble range of your meeting hall. I recommend building a trap corridor in the center of your meeting hall surronded by fortifications. use the trap corridor to execute any prisoners you find and their horrific deaths will gradually train discipline among the dwarves. Make sure to not do this too often as there is an unhappy thought that triggers any time a dwarf witnesses death.

That's the point. Kill the cuteness, it'll toughen everyone up more quickly!

Pretty much everything scares the bloody wits out of everybody.  The morale system is pretty bugged atm, which leads to all sorts of funny things.

You might want to put in natural discipline skill for civilised races and (semi)megabeasts. Novice discipline seems enough.

Can't you EMBARK with discipline skill on your starting 7? That would help a lot with the early game.

AHA! I found my problem. It would seem that, in the Orders section ( hotkey 'o' ) and in the Refuse section ( 'r' ) Dwarves from the outside (immigrants) are set to ignore refuse as a default. This meant that only my original dwarves and their children would haul refuse, and most of them are in the military full time.

That's not what that order means. It sets all your dwarves to ignore refuse that is currently sitting in an area marked as outdoors. :) But it should solve your problem anyway.

Now, about that hardening. Do you know if dwarves will still get discipline-y thoughts through a window? I don't want to dig shafts of light all the way down to the dining room, barracks, etc., to prevent miasma, but I'd like to keep (enemy) corpse piles laying around to help desensitize my dwarves. I figure surrounding the piles with windows would do the trick?

Create a well and lace the water with blood, cat on a spike will do. Lock dwarves in the room and force them to eat plump helmets and drink bloodwater. Drinking bloodwater generates a tragic thought and thus will desensitize the dorfs.

Plump helmets because plump helmets.

Use a vampiric cat for best results. Then you have a ton of hardened vampire dwarves, which is the end goal of many fortressses.
