IronTomato plays XCOM: UFO Defense
« on: July 11, 2014, 06:14:58 pm »

IT plays XCOM

The year is 1999. The Earth has become the target of a ruthless alien force. UFOs regularly show themselves to Earth's civilians, attacking with frightening psychic abilities as well as superior soldiers, vehicles and weaponry. Every existing Earth-based military is hopeless to survive against this powerful enemy. In a last-ditch effort to save Earth, all of the world's major governments combine their recources in order to create an elite, high tech special force known only as the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit. They are given no specific orders, other than to do the impossible, and save mankind from complete annhialation.

That's right, it's XCOM, baby.

This LP was inspired by Sirus' play-along, and GUNINANRUNIN's youtube series. To make it easier on myself, I will play this game on the open-source clone of the original XCOM, called OpenXCOM. Don't worry, though, it's still the UFO Defense that some of us know and love, but without all the kinks and bugs that made the original such a pain to play. (Also, real screenshots. Yay)

If you would like to join the fight, all you have to do is provide the following information for your soldier:

Name:
Picture (optional):
Gender:
Role:
Short Bio:

Make it as ridiculous as you'd like. I don't care if you're Rikka Takanashi.

Without further ado, let's get started.

Oh, fuck no. Nonono. I've never actually played on anything except beginner, and I still almost always lose 1 or 2 soldiers every mission, sometimes just to bad luck. I don't have a ton of experience with this game.

How much of a difference does the difficulty actually make? Could I go to experienced and still be (semi) comfy?

@Sergarr: Dear god.

@Sergarr: Dear god.

Aliens are a little more dangerous, and there's often more of them. You only need to have -500 points for two consecutive months to lose instead of the -900 for beginner. To be honest, losing only a soldier or two - and just to bad luck - suggests you're playing it on too lower a difficulty.

Troops are absolutely expendable in X-com - they're dirt cheap and you have a lot of them. To hire a soldier is 40,000 dollars - slightly less than half the value of a sold plasma pistol. Three troopers from a plasma rifle. 4.25 from a heavy plasma.

I'd suggest at least the third difficulty. X-Com's charm is in glorious failure and impossible successes. You'll get better as you play.

Okai. :3

If it be what the people desire, this will be sort of a blind LP.

I'll be honest, there are some UFO missions where I'll go in, kill a few people, and then the mission's finished. And I'm left there like "What, that's it? Okay". So this should be satisfying, to some degree.

Name: Arthur Kaos.
Picture (optional): TBA.
Gender: Male.
Role: Heavy Fire, (Auto cannon with incendiary), Psuedo-Flame-Thrower.
Short Bio: Coming from an extensive clan of military types, when the whisper of a rumour of an indication of intense warfare vs. Aliums breezed past the Kaos homestead, Arthur wiped down the heirloom Auto-Cannon his great-grandfather bashed together from several biscuit tins, a packet of dried baked beans, onion-salt, and a war-surplus plutonium battery.  Arthur packed his bags and hitch-hiked to the base, bypassing the recruitment process entirely and just lining up with the regular(?) recruits in the mess-hall.

The hardest part about playing superhuman is the extra HP aliens get and how fast they upgrade weapons. The easiest way to get past this is to focus purely on weapon research -> laser -> plasma before getting armor and other shinnanigans. They also do terror missions earlier so I tend to ignore the first terror mission if I'm not ready.

Also I recommend using a tank. People always say extra troops are "more efficient", but it's definitely easier to use a tank. Rocket Launcher Tanks are good stuff.

Also, aliens love spawning in barns. Always blow up barns with extreme prejudice.
