For some reason a piece of mudstone i had up on the first negative z level just spontaneously turned into magma and burned/collapsed through five or six z levels, only stopping when it landed on a bunch of dwarves in a busy thouroughfare. Is this a thing that we know can happen? Was it a freak accident? Is this a bug? I really don't know. But it's destroyed five of my primary thouroughfare hallways.

Edit:Scratch that, whatever happened took out the surface layer too. The mudstone lying on the ground just happened to come with it. I don't know what's up with the "cloud of magma" though. It was a tree collapse, but does that mean trees can create magma now? Grim days.

Maybe it was a glitch rather then a bug

"cloud of magma"
This is standard default description for rocks in gaseous state or something like that. In other words, it is not real magma. Your real issue seems to be known tree bug.

Zulban Anguishedorbs (Axelord) and her husband (a Farmer) have been quite busy.  10 months ago, she gave birth to her 10th child, darling little baby Limul Searchedshoot.  (The previous 9 children were born before the founding of Eldersworked.)  Just now, she gave birth to her 11th child, tiny little Limul Buriedinked.  She has both daughters with her now, as she continues her weapon drills.

To be more precise, Limul was born on 6 Slate 127, and her sister Limul was born on 25 Obsidian 127.

i was quite suprised by how trees work i was expecting that after you cut them down they would fall down onto the ground and then you would cut up the fallen tree into logs but they just fall apart into a pile of logs

This really disappointed me I was looking forward to cutting them down onto invaders

 Dwarfs are very talented.

They cut the trees into sizeable chunks, almost the whole way through
then knock it down and pick up the pieces

Moved my save to 0.40.05.  Spring came, and brought elves with it.  The elves, in turn, brought a vermin in a cage.

A elven caravan from Amena Enč has arrived.
(tame bat) has flown its way out of confinement!

I've never seen critters escaping from elven merchants' cages before.

Things escaping containers works properly now in the latest patch. Pretty sure it only applies to vermin, so no fear of a giant tiger escaping mid-trade or anything.
